Another IT guy... 6 years removed from college and primarily build client web applications using ASP/COM or VB.NET/ASP.NET with both Oracle and SQL Server back-ends. Of course, over that span of time my job has changed from heavy coder to light coder as I spend more time gathering requirements and writing specs for off-shore resources or contractors (who are from the same place as the off-shore people) and then have to baby-sit them to make sure they code the application correctly.

cool thread. I retired from I.T. last Nov. Worked in healthcare as a system programmer on the "main" "frame". I started in cobol programming and ended with z/OS and DB2 upgrades and performance tuning.

#8036, been around a long time.....I think IT is a great place to be. Job outlook will stay strong over the next decade at least.....let's face it, everything is using more and more technology. Ironically its one reason why I am trying to get into overland......I am too inundated with technology, I want to experience nature, the earth and its beauty.....tired of looking at walls in an office and need a fix!

Best thing is to go for what you're passionate about. CCIE's will ensure a 6 figure income, so if money is the goal, that's probably the most lucrative. Other well paid certs are the JNCE (Juniper), CISSP/CISA/GIAC (Security), CWNE (Wireless). It's certainly a good approach thought to start with the associate certification levels and work up through the ranks.
