4runner at shop need advice on ping sound

I don't post here much but would really value input on my situation. Maybe someone has had an similar experience.

My 1999 4Runner with 213k on it started mis-firing. First problem ever.
Diagnosed reason, oil was leaking into a spark plug well disabling the spark plug. Being that it has 213k on it I decided to spend the money and have my mechanic replace the timing belt, water pump, valve cover gasket, plugs and wires. It seems like they my have replaced a few other seals while everything was apart.

When the put the engine and its parts back together the mis-fire was resolved. However, a pinging sound developed in the lower portion of the engine.

Anyone have and idea what could cause pinging in the lower part of the engine?

I would really love to get my 4Runner in the 500k club any help helps... I really don't have a full depth of knowledge when it comes to cars. But I understand how combustible engines work.

Thanks

No check engine light I assume? If the computer cant tell you anything... I doubt anyone will be able to give you a definitive answer unless they could look at it, hear it, etc...

So the mechanic is telling me that a rod bearing has gone bad, showed me some metal shavings in the oil pan and said I need a new engine. Asked if oil pressure was good , YES. Asked if they did a compression test, NO. They said the "knocking" started right after they put the engine back togather. So, they turned it off immediatly. Hand cranking it, it gets stuck and frees up. I have not personally heard the sound. But hope to tomorrow.

I reconize that this is the best forum for 4runners. If anyone has anything they can share that might help me help these guys fix my truck. Thanks you.

I brought in a friend who rebuilds 4runners and he thinks the timing is off.

these are non interference engines, if cranking by hand and you have a "hard" spot, valve timing has nothing to do with it. oil pressure could totally still be good with a bad bearing. Is it possible the miss was due to internal engine damage? Unfortunately your mechanic may be right. Any monkey can replace a t-belt in these things, i would be really suprised if they screwed anything up although for your sake i hope they did! lol

not there before they pulled it in but there after a large job?including a misfire? seems a lil suspect.?i would second guess everything at this point? could be a timing issue but you could see pretty easy if the belt is out of place by taking the cover back off and checking?
good luck i hope its something simple and not a shop error?

Appon futher inspection a rod broke. I guess the question now is, who is responceable for the damage done during shop time? Thanks everyone for keeping this forum as informitive as it is. Lot of good info here.

Unfortunately theres no way to prove when the rod broke. Chances are they misdiagnosed the misfire and just assumed it was ignition related. I had a headgasket job come in last year on a 97 tacoma. It had a misfire when it came in.. When I was prepping the block i scraped some carbon off #1 cyl. and it just pushed right down, had a broke rod. The owner didnt believe us and had to come in and see it. He said he never heard or noticed anything. Just got lucky we caught it before it went back together or we would have been in the same situation as the shop your dealing with. I would hope they work with you in this situation but i really cant see any way changing tbelt, valve cover gaskets etc. would break a rod. If you decide to have them tear it down, you could ask to be shown the piston (all of them) to see if it made contact with anything. Keep us updated!
