My 2005 V8 SR5 4runner died while driving today. Just keeled over and wouldn't start. Luckily, I was on a quiet street 2 miles from my house and was able to coast to the curb. Had accessory power, but car wouldn't crank at all. Had gas, no puddles. Had to be flatbedded to dealer.

WTF?

What's the point of owning a toyota other than reliability? At least my BMW was fun to drive . . .

Wow that sucks. Can you give us more info on your truck? Did you have an aftermarket alarm installed or a remote starter? Any "idiot" lights on the dash come on? Did you try to pull the negative terminal on the battery for a few minutes and then reattach, then try to start it?

Let us know what the dealership diagnoses. I think Mark86 had a similar problem and it turned out the dealership did not install the remote starter/alarm into his truck properly, hence why I asked if you had one.

Even the best (Toyota!) can make a lemon once in a while. Time for you to make some lemonade!

Hearing something like this with a Toyota is very rare. If I were you, I'd go play the lottery today.

Sorry to hear that, it's a bummer. I know it's a pain but hang in there. JUST BECAUSE IT DIED DOES'NT MEAN IT'S LEMON !!! See what the dealer say's and keep us posted.

Sorry to hear about your problem. When I first read this thread, I was convinced that you had a remote starter installed. My 4Runner died in the middle of the road, but that was caused by the dealer hooking up the remote starter incorrectly. Did it seem that your battery was dead or would your truck not crank at all? It could be something as simple as a faulty battery or alternator. I hope everything works out for you.

Wasn't the battery. Accessory power was stong and the dealer confirmed this late Friday.

One day I almost start kicking my old accord for dying on the middle of the road. There was no gas in the tank, the fuel gauge was not working properly so I did not know.

I believe so. Gas guage indicated between 1/4 and 1/2 and mileage til empty indicator said about 110 miles. Could they both be wrong? Possible.

hmm.. weird.. mine died today too.. but i've had an incessant problem with it stalling while driving..

but it died today on the 7th stall in about 3 minutes, and it wouldn't start for a good couple minutes and when it did, it had the CEL on and the VSC OFF lights on. But they went away when I drove home tonight. It's really weird..

i honestly don't know what it is.. dealer couldn't fix it the first two times.. i'm wanting to bring it home and have it looked at the dealership at home..

oh, and no aftermarket remote start..

Sounds like some sort of electronic glitch. Did you use a different key than normal or have another key made recently?

Alpha....how many miles are on your truck? It sounds to me like you might have a fuel delivery problem...possibly there is some junk in your fuel filter than occasionally moves around and restricts the flow.....The VSC and CEL would be on due to all of the stalling and hiccuping and are probably unrelated to the problem.

Just about 19k now.. It's been happening for about 3k miles, since December. It's weird though, since it isn't consistent. No signs of choking or anything, doesn't happen at a certain rpm range, doesn't happen when i hit a certain button, certain speed, certain electrical load, etc. It's just random. And doesn't happen daily. I'm about a week and a half away from bringing it home and having it looked at by the dealership there, that I think is a better service department. I'll have to see what they say.

First time I brought it to the dealership here; bad fuel, supposed diesel. maybe, but i didn't fill up any diesel or at a gas station that carried diesel. Second time brought it, problem not reproducable. I didn't bring it a third.

I looked into the lemon law, CO requires I believe 4 times or more, and within the first year. I could have had the 4 times covered no problem at the rate the dealership was going, but the truck is a 2k4.

It's not quite that simple. I've been through a lemon law case (that I won, by the way) and it is much more difficult than most people realize to get a buy-back on your car.

It's probably a lot simpler than the litigation I do for a living. Of course, if the car breaks once no judge (or arbitrator) is going to make them buy the car back.

Complete unanticipated loss of power while driving though? That's as serious as serious gets.

Dealer's nice but doesn't have a clue. They say it's the fuse box, which they have to order from New Jersey. After talking to them I thought that that makes no sense since the car had accessory power.

A friend of mine said said she thought it was the fuel pump -- which made a lot of sense.
