That's good. I was never sold on the FJ. I tried to like it but there was just too much that I hated about it. The 4Runner however, well I'll settle for #4. :)
 
I had my FJ for two years and ended up a few grand ahead when I traded it in on the 4Runner. The 4Runner has everything I liked about the FJ and fixes most of the design flaws that I had with the FJ. So no complaints here
 
My original plan with getting a 4Runner was to find a one or two year old example with low miles to drive until a possible 6th gen. came around . There were barely any private sellers in my area and the dealers typically had their used inventory priced at just $3000 less than a new one. Of course, none had the trim, options and colors I wanted anyway. Hence, I got into a ’16. Nice to see so many Toyotas in the top 10!
 
I feel like it is a little better than 75%. How is the Range Rover #6 at 72%....I call BS on that! I lost so much money on one of those few years back not to mention the cost of maintenance.

That was pretty much my experience.

I had been shopping for an FJ - but wasn't sold on basically having 2 doors (I have kids man!).

I was looking for a '14 trail with less than 20 mile, and wasn't really turning much up I was interested in for less than $34k.

I really try not to buy new, but when I was at the local dealer, they did their best to keep me from leaving without a new one. I walked away with $37k TOTAL with KDSS.

I really couldn't pass that up. New for just a few more grand than what I was finding used for!

I'm finding exactly the same. Very few private sales, and the amount asked sends too high not to just get a new one, especially if you can talk down the price enough.

2 years old, gently used... just not a good deal vs new from what I see.
 
Same experience here. I have never been interested in buying new but the price was right compared to all the user ones.
 
I've also come to this realization trying to find a barely used Trail. Better off buying new. Dealers love there used t4r's and don't really back off the pricing which is too close to new. Makes me wonder how they sell barely used examples ha.
 
Local dealer had a '15 TEP with 13k miles. I was looking at it, got their best deal, then found out a new '16 TEP on the lot with 2 miles and exact same options could be had for only $2k more. Needless to say, I bought the new '16.
 
Almost bought a 2014 trail non kdss certified with 37k yesterday for 30.5. Would need tires and brakes next year. Which would put closer to 32k. For another 5k I could get a new 2016 for 37k

A friend is selling his not even 2 years old FJ because of this reason. Kids and resale value. Dealer is begging him for it and he's barely going to lose a dime. All of his mods are quality and like new so he'll get most back on those too. He's bought a new taco.
 
Unfortunately in Virginia you get taxed, every year, on the assessed value of your vehicle. So when the value doesn't drop your annual tax bill stays high.
 
I just sold my 2014 rubicon because of multiple quality issues. Amazingly it held it's value great for my trade in on a 2016 sr5 4x4. There is no comparison in build quality. I am sure the rubicon may out perform it on very difficult off road trails but if you don't have a mechanic in the back seat then you are in trouble. 18k miles and it had a bad water pump, oil leak, coolant leak and differential leak.

Same here in Alabama used are selling for more than new and a new car registration only pays sales tax, however, used is taxed according to bb value so the long term cost is high when a car does not depreciate. Guess that is why I see a lot of old cars/trucks that have less renewal cost at registration time.
