Funny thing is coming from 13 years of driving a CrewMax Tundra the 5th gen 4Runner feels tiny and nimble to me in comparison.
Late 70’s and 80’s full size sedans were all hood and trunk. The interiors were often cramped and uncomfortable. Some truly miserable cars produced before “cab forward” became the norm. I parked next to an 80’s Cutlass Supreme two door midsized coupe a few days ago and the Interior was so tiny. The entire car was much smaller than I remembered.

Pretty much. The Delta is over 2 feet longer than a modern mid sized sedan but probably has less rear leg room. On the plus side, the seats are like comfortable couches, it steers with a finger tip, and the view over the hood is great.

1985 Olds Delta 88 dimensions: length 218.1 in, width 76.3 in, wheel base 116 in, estimated curb weight 3750 lbs.
5th Gen 4Runner dimensions: length 190.7, width 75.8, wheel base 109.8, estimated curb weight 4700 lbs.
Dwarfs it? Nope. Yes it's heavier and taller but that's it. As others have said, the interiors of new vehicles are much bigger though.

Thanks professor, but I know the dimensions of my cars. The post was a lighthearted coronavirus boredom inspired observation at what a modern mid size SUV looks like against a full sized sedan from the 80's. And if you use your eyes you can see the 4Runner pretty much dwarfing the Delta.

I realize it is a lighthearted post, no need to get nasty. I'm simply pointing out the dimensions of both vehicles. Facts are funny things and looks can be deceiving. The dimensions of the vehicles are what they are. The Runner looks bigger because it's so much taller.

Not sure how far back you mean by "the past" but I would disagree with you based on my experience of being a kid in the '70s. Cars were boats back then.
My parent's family hauler was a '72 Chevrolet Kingswood Estate station wagon that they bought new. With the back seats folded down you could fit a fullsize sheet of plywood in the back and still get the tailgate up. Six adults could ride in it easily, and it still had a third-row rear facing tailgunner seat for at least 2 kids.
