4Runner EDR

Oh, do you mean "Event Data Recorder?" I forgot we have that baked into the SRS system...

Unplug the SRS module and run with no airbags, pretensioners, ect. That's really the only way, the EDR is built as part of the SRS module itself.

EDR is nothing more than a recorder for various data points in an accident, it collects some data from the vehicle at point of accident; that's it. It's supposedly more for Toyota to use for information purposes in designing safer vehicles than sending it to your insurance company.

It's the same concept as "Freeze Frame Data" that OBDII has been doing in all cars since '96.

Any particular reason you want to disable it?

Thanks for the information. Is the EDR tied into the airbags SRS hardware physically or is it a separate hardware component on a chain? I assume it is located under the center console, similar to a Taco layout:

There are no video's or how-to's for the procedure. I know it dangerous messing around with airbags but with them turned off and battery disconnected, it should just be a matter of removing the device.

It is the SRS ECU (Toyota calls them both SRS ECU, but more commonly "Airbag Sensor Assembly Center ", It's built as part of the unit located under the dash. To disable it you lose the SRS system.

Not to sound like I'm making fun of you, but if you have privacy concerns because of the EDR; sell your 4Runner and buy a vehicle from before 1996.

All modern vehicles record various data constantly, hell I wouldn't be surprised if the Entune units store information as well. The thing is none of that data is sent anywhere (at least for now), it's just stored in there's modules until called on via a scan tool.

Yep. Now On Star and others can be different but Toyota the recorded data stays on board and from what I understand only the last few seconds (maybe four) of acceleration, braking etc is recorded.

Funny you mention the year 1996. I just sold my offroad 96 Isuzu Rodeo so all these gadgets are pissing me off. I guess its a tech shock for not driving any new cars. I am an analog guy but really do like my 4runner trail. I wish they kept the Spartan aspects of the truck and had a separate model for the metros.

I believe that's true, as far as I understand Toyota's "SOS Connect" is nowhere near the level of OnStar, so I highly doubt it does any data transmission like OnStar does.

Also you're right, it stores 5 seconds of data and updates it in 1 second blocks. At least according to the following:

I hear you, my VSC regularly tries to kill me when it gets a bit icy out here. I can't stand all the BSM, LDA, Parking Assist, ect. on these new vehicles. Hell I almost never use the rearview cameras in our vehicles (the LC200 and Rav4 with the 360 view being the only exception because that's so cool). I'm a bit too "old school" for my age when it comes to that technology.
