4Runner first-timer questions - tires/space

I just bought my first 4Runner last week. :bigok: 2007 SR5 full-time 4wd v8. I love it! I had a Jeep GC for 2 days.....now I dont :)
Anyway, I had to purchase new tires for my yote and opted to go with 265/70r17 over the OE 265/65, fills the wells up better, looks better and gives just a skosh more GC. We did a try fit at the tire store and it all looks good, no rubbing, but it is tight. I took it to the woods this weekend and it climbed up my mountain road (pretty rough) like a goat! I figured out the clicking noise I kept hearing was the traction controls operating and they did so to perfection as I negotiated some pretty hairy stuff. I also tried out the DAC and it worked, albeit the lag time was a little disconcerting a couple times, I couldn't help but "help" it out on a couple steep places. In all that rock climbing, I never heard anything that sounded like rubbing or contact. However, when turning at "driveway" speed, especially if a pothole is hit, I get a little chatter ocaisionally that I didnt get before the tire change. Sometimes I think it is the trac-control engaging for some reason - is that possible? I dont think it is a big deal but have read a little on here about folks using spacers and such to address this situation but I don't even know enough to know what to search for. I dont want some big lift, just a little more tire space with the 70's.
Can anyone direct me to the right answer? I am a very handy fellow if I do sayso myself and can likely do the work on my own with some proper quidance.
Secondly, this yote has 62K on it. Is there anything I should be aware of on the 4.7 v8 coming up in the near future? This vehicle was taken very good care of, came with good maint records and was checked out by the dealer closely.
Thirdly - where's the best place to get a grille/brush guard? :naughty:

Thanks fellow T4R's !

Most tire rubbing is on the front fender liners or mudflaps. What kind of tires are they? Some in that size (ie BFG ATs) will rub when others won't. Turn the wheels full lock and look for marks where it is close to the fenders. If it's rubbing there you'll see it. Wheel spacers will only make this problem worse. The simple fix is to move the fender liners forward (very easy to do) and trim or remove the mudflaps. The spacers will only help if you're rubbing on the upper control arm but that is unlikely with that tire size. They are mostly for looks.

The noise you are hearing, if not tire rub, could be the traction control or the ABS. The only major maintenance to do on the V8 is the timing belt (do the water pump at the same time) which I believe is around 60k miles or 100k kms.

Happy trails

thanks gentlemen, I read a couple of posts on FJ springs etc, and something called 2/2, or 2/1 ets was mentioned - what is that talking about? and why would someone just do the front and not both ends?
I am running BFG's but looking at the wheel well, Im having a hard time seeing how a little lift is going to make wheel well contact worse, perhaps Im not understanding....I dont have any contact now. (The chatter I hear on occasion is the Trac control. I talked to a dealer today, they told me when I changed the tire size, the computer's calculations of tire rotation at full turn is now a little off so at times the wheel spin difference at turn may be interpreted by the computer as slipping. It only happens for a split second so I dont really think its something to worry about, they didn't.)
I'm mainly looking for a little more ground clearance now with the bigger tires.

There are 2 types of spacers. One is wheelspacers, the other is lift spacers. Wheelspacers (ie Spidertrax) are rings that go between the rim and hub to set the wheels out further in the wheel well. These will usually lead to more rubbing issues and are mostly for looks (stance). Lift spacers are for just that, to lift the suspension. These are rings that sit on top of the springs effectively raising the suspension. (this may help a bit with fender liner rubbing issues but can also lead to control arm rubbing)The 2/2, 2/1, 3/2 etc that you see people talking about are this type of lift and how much they provide. The 2/1 for example is common to lift the front 2" and the rear 1" which levels the T4R and corrects for the nose down rake from the factory.
Another common route is to lift the front only to level the stance is the FJ swap and spacer mod. The FJ springs are a direct swap and are good for about 1/2" of lift on the front. Added to that is a 1/2" spacer for a combined lift of approx 1.5" (trust me, it adds up:biggrin2:)

Here's a thread to see what the FJ +spacer looks.

As for the BFGs, they are usually the worst tire for rubbing issues because of the square edge on them. I put on 265/70/17s which rubbed at full lock. Moving the liner forward and trimming the mudflaps fixed this.
