No problem, like I said I've posted this TSB before, but it just hit me that if you searched it wouldn't be very easy to find unless you actually sat down and looked at every post of the threads.

Only if you think they are interfering with the gas pedal.

IMO, there's no need to do the recall even if you have the factory floormats. Toyota's just covering their bases. Nothing wrong with our T4Rs.

As an FYI to this thread, everytime anyone has service at the dealership, you have to tell them you don't want the safety recall done, otherwise it's automatic, and they do it without notifying you.


Edit: I am changing my opinion/advice. I would advise anyone to seek advice from a qualified Toyota service advisor concerning the Husky liners or the need to do the safety recall on the pedal or floor mats.

Odd... they shouldn't be doing it without your consent as it would be an unauthorized repair and the dealer would be liable if something went wrong..

I got the letter last week and threw it in the trash. My bud at a toyota dealer here said they have to have written consent wither you want it or don't want it. Again it only happens if you go to the dealer if you want service.

I'm just relaying with my service advisor told me.

When a vehicle comes in for service at the Toyota dealership, the first thing they do is check for safety recalls. If there is a recall, he said they automatically do it. I tried to get a waiver for it, to have something permanent in my records that I did not ever want it done, and he said the only thing that could be done is to tell the service advisor everytime I came in for service, to not perform the recall, otherwise they are automatically performed.

Nothing was said about requiring the permission of the owner of the vehicle to perform the safety recall.

Well I picked up (new to me) 2006 SE 4WD with 60k miles last week from toyota dealership here in TX. Yesterday I was just going with the paperwork and found some receipt related to gas pedal. Went outside to look and ...:wtf:....they apparently sawed off the gas pedal while it was still at the dealer.:redbrick:

Below is the pic of the pedal and look at the handiwork!!! :gun4:
So if you are thinking about it....dont do it!

Yeah, they did this to me too! I can't beleive it, now I have this stubby gas pedal and it really bugs me. I'm looking all over for a replacement.

If you didn't have it done - don't!

They hacked mine up during a service trip which I didn't discover untill I got home too. I called them back and said I wanted a new pedal. He asked me if there was something wrong with the sawed up one functionally and I said no, but that it simply looks bad and I wanted the new pedal. They said okay and got one in stock within a few days. That was probably about four plus months ago. Just ask them for a new one. Even it is on back order now, you will get it eventually.

Other issues with the sawed off pedal

My dealership did the recall work automatically when I had a regular service back in December. Since then I've accrued over $1,500 in medical bills caused by a sciatic nerve and knee issues. My doctor and I have determined that the angle that the pedal causes my leg to be in has caused the problem. I've tried every possible combination of seat adjustments but because I'm short there is no appropriate setting for me in this vehicle now.

I'm going to trade in my 4runner this weekend. Very disappointing as I've loved this vehicle but I obviously can't continue to cause physical injury due to poor ergonomics.

Just an additional consideration for those contemplating the option. I never had an issue with the accelerator and manufacturer floor mats and really wish they hadn't chopped of the pedal.

The notice that I received from Toyota Canada regarding 03-09 T4Rs clearly outlined a voluntary safety improvement campaign to address concerns about a potential risk for floor mat interference with the accelerator pedal.

Yes, my Toyota Service Advisor also has my recall notice pop up on his computer screen each time my T4R goes in for routine service.

He then asks me if I want the safety improvement repair. I respectfully decline, and the work is not done.

This notice will stay logged as having not been completed on this vehicle - if/when I sell it or trade it in, the next owner can then decide if they want the "improvement" or not.

The campaign is not mandatory and is not the result of a vehicle defect, but Toyota is being cautious in regards to the Motor Vehicle Safety Act out of concern for the safety of its customers.
