4Runner got hit today and need some help (pic inside)

"This is pretty depressing. I bought the vehicle new in August 2013. It only has 3100 miles on it. Talk about diminished value"

Opportunity knocks. Possible to make more valuable.

Stiff upper lip, old chap.

Just a FYI and my experience with a similar incident 1.5 weeks ago. Someone backed into my 4Runner. (they fortunately left a note, good karma on them)

Doesn't look like as much damage as yours, but the repair shop estimate quote includes replacing the entire front bumper plastic, painting, labor and is estimated at 900$. Most likely will be using that 900$ as a 900$ discount on a Shrockwork's bumper.

Here's my 2 cents. I'm an insurance adjuster in Canada... Familiar with US insurance, but every state has it's different quirks.

If you have issues with Third Party Insurer call your own insurer. Liability obviously isn't an issue, or they wouldn't be offering to do repairs. Your insurer will handle your repairs and subrogate against the third party insurer to recoup all costs, including deductible. Your adjuster can make a simple call to the third party adjuster you are dealing with now to confirm liability is not an issue and than waive your deductible. This is within your rights as an insured who carries Collision on his policy. Your premiums have no reason to increase because again, you're not at fault.

Pros to going through own insurer.
1) New vehicle you will have Replacement Cost on policy. This means brand new OEM parts. Under liability the third party can get away with using after market parts because technically they are only responsible to replace your parts with used parts, because your truck is used...
2) Take it to whatever shop you want. Your insurer may recommend, but really they shouldn't care because they're subrogating anyways... Also it's your vehicle. They can recommend, not demand.
3) Lastly, your insurer is going to want to provide you better service. You're paying your premiums to them... Not the case with the third party insurer.

Hope this helps.

Cheers, Tom

Diminished value is no joke. If I was you I would research diminished value and try to recoup another $1k based on diminished value. Take it to the Toyota dealership and ask them to give you a quote for trade in and how much is going to be taken off due to the repair. I did not do this when our 2007 Acura TL type S was rear ended by an Explorer. The other insurance paid for everything but when we went to sell/trade in later we lost another $1k in value because we are honest people and disclosed that it was rear ended. Also, keep the photo's of the damage. Although expensive, it doesn't look like the frame was bent. The photo's may help later to explain to someone when carfax pulls up accident data and you are trying to sell it.

I would sure have them go through the motor mounts, radiator, suspension and such to make sure everything is aligned and not leaking, bent or broken. You never know what rattles and problems may occur down the road from taking the hit. If you put it back to stock I would pitch for a whole new bumper cover, grill. I just don't trust a re paint job holding up a few years down the road on the plastic bumper. As others have mentioned, The shrockworks option would be very hard to pass up at this point.

One other thing, while our Acura was being repaired they tried to put us in a roller skate of a rental car. I had to fight with them to get a car that would safely carry 5 people.

My experience with insurance companies has not been very good. You are mandated to pay for it and then when you need it you get jerked around.

just my .02 from my past experiences. Good luck.

Regarding the Shrockworks bumper. Does it replace the stock OEM bumper or does it fit over the stock bumper? Thanks.

Every state is different so you need to confirm what the regs are in your state. In addition to that each insurance company has their own policies on what types of parts they will use regardless of whether you are an insured or 3rd party.

Highly recommend speaking with both insurance companies, ask what their parts usage policy is, find out what vendors they use and then you can make a more informed decision

Lastly, ask the shop if Toyota can price match any of the aftermarket parts, If you want all OEM. Insurance companies are going to follow state requirements so may not have incentive or requirement to go all OEM.

On the bright side (no pun), you didn't install HID's yet! Find a good body shop that will paint toyota pearl and bake the bumper. If the 4R is only a couple months old, I wouldn't recommend blending the fenders and hood, unless, of course, there's damage to those panels. Don't take delivery until it's a sunny day so you can be sure the colors match well. Also, be sure the bumper aligns well to the fender, lights, hood, etc. My bumper was replaced and the driver's side has a noticeable gap that drives me nuts... one of these weekends I'll correct it.

**Update** 4Runner that got hit last month..pics inside

Here is the thread from last month:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-g...-need-some-help-pic-inside-2.html#post1569786

The body shop is having a hell of time getting the new bumper cover to line up correctly. They tried telling me "It's plastic going to metal and everything clips together so its not going to be perfect". They cant seem to get it right. I have been without my vehicle for almost a month. Is it really that difficult for them to get the bumper cover to line up with the fenders? The pics don't do it justice. Do I just keep telling them to fix it until they get it right? This is a 2013 with 3k miles. Any advice would be great. Thanks!

I would make them fix it. You will stare at that imperfection everyday when you walk to your truck. It will drive you crazy. I had the Toyota body shop redo body work on my 2010 Tundra 3 times within a 6 month span. It still kills me that after that many attempts, I can still see several imperfections.

I know there will always be imperfections but I feel this one is significant and bother the crap out of me. I would imagine they could get it to line up somewhat better but I am starting to have my doubts.

Have other guys take pictures of theirs so you can compare.
Edit: Just checked mine, never been hit and the gap is not uniform. Never even noticed it.

I am having it repaired at a Toyota Dealership body shop here in Phoenix and they still have a couple 2013's on the lot that I can compare it to. Mine is way off when I compare it to the others.

for the amount of money they are being paid (by you or the insurance company), they have to get it better than the end result so far. It's their freakin product!

Nothing is ever going to go back exactly how it was BUT they should definitely be able to do a better job than that. Keep making them adjust it until you are satisfied.
