4runner Helping Me Cope

Life really stinks for me the last month and a half as I watch my wife stuggle with cancer that has spread to her brain and spine. It is hard on me, can't imagine what is going through her head. As I try to stay focused on life and coping with the situation, the 4runner helps out. I love the vehicle and it is just one outlet for getting my mind off things.

Sorry if this thread is a bit out on the edge, but it is 4runner related. If anyone has any other suggestions for coping with a situation like mine, please help me out. Thanks.

Hey Wiseguy, sorry about your wife. I hope she's able to pull through. Cancer is so very hard to deal with. I'll be praying for her and for your family.

It's got to be awful what you're going through.
This may make you think of the good times which will probably make ya sad...but a drive into the backcountry or any near by location you and your wife may have explored. Take a few pictures, do doughnuts in the snow anything which may let you relax for a few minutes.
Post your pictures here of your adventures.

If getting out in your Runner is way too much now, just read the discussions here.

My wife died suddenly 2 years ago of a heart attack right in front of me , and there wasn't a thing I could do to help her. So the 13th of December is pretty rough for me still. Since I'm retired I don't see many people anymore so this forum and my 4Runner and one pretty old tomcat are helping me push on. Take each day as it comes and don't try to look too far ahead. Life goes on.

+ 1, stay tough and continue to be strong for her in her time of need.

I feel for you and know how you feel.
My Dad had the same thing happen to him. It hit me hard and I never knew I loved him so much until he got sick and then passed on. I found that going to the gun range and shooting some pistols helped my get out anger, sadness and what ever else was couped up inside me. Hang in there and be there for your wife.

I empathize with your situation and I am truly sorry you and your wife have to go through this pain. I recently lost my grandmother to brain cancer last month, a week before thanksgiving. It was really agonizing for everyone to see her go through it. You really have to be strong for both yourself and your wife. The best support system is your family and friends. Devote your time and energy to making her comfortable and happy despite the difficult condition. The best thing to do sometimes is to let that anguish out. It's ok to be angry, to cry, and feel helpless and frustrated. At times, I even blamed God for what happened to my grandparents (both succumbed to cancer). But life is all about the human condition. I don't really have a point to tell you but to appreciate what you have. You have our prayers, and hey, we're here to listen for what it's worth. God bless you and your wife and I hope she pulls through.

Many hospitals have set up contacts just for people who are confronting situations like this for the first time. Typically, the social service department of a hospital will have those contact numbers.

Hold strong. you are not alone.

Thank you to everyone who posted a response. Means a lot to hear from others about their experiences and to hear the re-emphasis on taking care of myself so I can stay strong for my wife. I hope this also helps others who are not going through anything like to this to appreciate what they have. So go out and hug your spouse, kids, relatives, etc.

......if you want any assistance contacting appropriate sources of support in your area feel welcome to pm me.......

My thoughts and prayers my friend .

I know its tough on you , but just be there for her right now. She needs your strength and hope.

*sigh* I'm sorry man. It's nice to see everyone reacting the way they are on the forum, though its sad it has to be through something like this. Not sure if you're religious, but as a religious man, I'll be praying for you and your wife.

I can only hope and pray for the best for you and your wife. Trials like these remind us how precious life is. I'm sure you will provide unwavering love and support for her, but take a few moments each day and give yourself some time to clear your head. Go for a drive, take in some scenery and reflect. Its just as important that you take care of yourself as you care for her.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Many prayers for you and your wife. My soon to be brother-in-law went through this about 3 years ago when his wife started with breast cancer that shortly spread to the rest of her at a fast rate (brain, spine, etc.). The best thing to have during all this is to have a healthy outlet for your stresses and people to listen and talk to you. God Bless.
