4Runner in Chains

So how do you think you would do out there if you had no chains and were locked in 4lo or 4hi .

4Lo with the diff locked was best. Without chains was much more difficult, but mostly possible. Getting up any sort of incline was really tricky without the chains. With the chains on I was able to stop on an incline and get started again, impossible without the chains. Also lateral stability was a big plus with the chains on. In a few cases I just needed an extra run or two at it and I was able to go (without the chains).


On Dec 1st we had 12" snow fall I was all over hell and it handled fine. Had to have the diff. locked to prevent VSC from kicking in so I could really giver hell. Atrac was kickin in and worked well.

It has allot to do with the type of snow in my opinion. With fresh snow you can get thru quite a bit. As it sits and gets icy/hard it gets much harder to pass, and the risk of high centering becomes a problem.

Bottom line: the chains added a great deal of traction. In this particular case, I could have done without, but I was just testing and could see the difference they make.

Nice pics and here we finally got real snow in the Denver area and I got out to play too.

1st storm was about 30" here and then a week later we got another 17 and then a few days later we got a paltry 10" and it it's quite a mess on our side streets.

I'd like chains but around the town I been fine but they would be nice up in the mountains.

picked up a set of chains for my truck too after trying to decide between the diamond pattern or v-bar. Finially decided on v-bar, as they are supposedly better suited for off light trucks/off road use.

Wow, never seen the V-bar before. They look they'll give one hell of a bite in snow.

ya i tried plowing through a snow bank with them, turns out i bit off more than i could chew. had lots of traction, not enough power to move forward. didnt think to try low range at the time...

How much was the pair, what brand and where did you get em?!

They look like severe duty for pure ice! High centering is still an issue....

they were $210 CAD and i got them from a local auto store, but i think they ordered them through OK Tire...not sure though. I dont who makes them, Quality Snow Chains or something like that.

Alright it snowed again last week, so I decided it was time to put the chains to the test. most of the places the snow was just over knee high, although it was so frozen in some spots i could stand on top without falling through. That it hard to plow through. I really should get that headlight fixed...

Had to bring out the shovel here. The back tire du down to the dirt and still couldnt get enough traction.
