4runner jumps a little when changing gears

So this is something I've noticed for a while but have just been ignoring, but it's starting to bother me. If I'm at a dead stop and let's say I'm in 'D', and I shift into 'R', my 4runner jumps just a little bit. Nothing to big but it is definitely noticeable. The same thing goes if I do something like shift from 'P' to 'D', the car will jump forward just like an inch, or backward just like an inch if I shift from 'P' to 'R'. Is this a normal thing for 4runners? I've never been in another car that does this before. By the way, I drive a 2004 w/ around 64,000 miles on it if that helps anything

Sounds like it's just the engine trying to pull the car and brakes are stopping it, sort of a jerk? If you haven't noticed it on other cars its probably because your 4Runner has much more torque than most cars. Doesn't sound like anything to worry about.

Mine does the same thing when cold and the idle is high. You might want to lube the driveshafts & ujoints.

Driveline clunk? Maybe. Lube as previous post may help. I have 60,000mi 08 4R and just had my trans fluid changed all 11/12 qts, I only said this since u have similar miles as me. I can't say it would definitely help ur prob thou but maybe.

What he's describing doesn't sound like the driveline clunk to me, he's saying from D to R it jerks, that's not indicative of the clunk in my opinion, I think it's just the engine pulling against the brakes. But, I could be wrong. Either way you might as well lube the driveshaft zerks.

Shut off the A/C and see if it still does it.

I think it might just be the engine trying to move but the brakes holding it back like thirstyturtle said, b/c I've read about the driveline clunk on hear and it sound different from what I'm experiencing. Also, my trans fluid was changed a few thousand miles ago and I just went out and checked it and all looks good. I got in the car and tried it with the A/C off but that didn't really help, but I could feel the engine trying to tug on the brakes for just that little jump, and if I pressed on the brake harder then the jump wasn't as bad, so I guess it's just the engine trying to work against the brakes

Almost every car with an auto tranny that I've ever owned (over 12) would try to lurch when going from forward to reverse, vice versa or from neutral to either gear. Maybe your idle is too high if it's really bad.

I drive a supercharged 3rd Gen, and it does the same thing when I do not have my foot depressing the brake 100%. I am agreeing with the thought that it's normal, and it's just got a bit more torque than other auto's you've driven.
