4Runner made both the most & least reliable list

I have followed Consumer Reports for many years and I don't think I ever rembered a car making the BEST and WORST list at the same time. I do remeber different engines can affect the rating, but not to the affect of this.

Also, it has been a long since I have seen any Toyota on a list for being the least reliable. I mean there have been some Toyota's below average, but not on the list of being the "LEAST RELIABLE".

This is quite a shock, hopefully things will turn around. :confused:
 
Lets see here, 1 car from a U.S manufacture on the good side and 16 on the bad side. Just wait, in 3 more years Toyota will be the #2 selling manufacture in this country.

That may be well and good for Toyota, but what about the people that bought a 03 V6 4Runner? People buying a 4Runner weren't expecting the reliabilty of a Chevy or a Jeep. :mad:
 
that is why I opted for the V8. There were just too many complaints about the noise in the V6 and I don't think Toyota was doing much about it. Maybe this will make Toyota wake up and fix the V6.
 
If you think you have it bad, just be lucky you dont have a trailblazer. What a hunk of sheetmetal.

Ha Ha my sister-in-law does. She keeps picking crappy american cars.
Lets face it the General has been pumping out some crap for quite a while now.
 
I've had no problems with my V6. It is a bit on the noisier side, but it <I>is</I> a truck engine. Maybe it's just the early build models, mine was one of the last 03's to be built. Only time will tell.
 
Aside from the valve lifter noise that has been reported (and I don't have it), I've not heard of any other problems with the engine. :confused:

We subscribe to the magazine, but it hasn't arrived yet. It's doubtful that they will give any further explanation, too.

If I recall correctly, they ask how many times the vehicle has been taken in for service for the major areas they define. If you took it in several times for valve lifter noise, that could cause the numbers to be skewed.

Mine has been purring like a kitten since the day we picked it up -- and it is one of the very first built (service manager checked it out and said it was built in the first 6 weeks of V6 production). If there were problems, I'd probably be the one to have them!!
 
To be on the Least Reliable list you need to have more problems than just the engine. Then to top it off the V8 4Runner is one of the Most Reliable. That is why I am so shocked. I would like to know where all the "black" marks are for the V6 4Runner and the "red" marks for the V8 4Runner.
 
I'll let you know what I can figure out when the issue arrives. Something just doesn't add up, because the two key differences in the V6 and V8 models are the engine (V6 is new, V8 proven) and the transmission (4-speed proven, 5-speed new). All the other systems are the same.

Of course, you have to be careful because they have a history of suing people....

Actually, people sue them and they usually come out on top. I don't always agree with them, but I respect that they give their opinion regardless of the outcome.
 
They also make it very clear that if you use their name, they will sue. It's their way of making sure manufacturers don't use them as a source in their advertising, but you know how sue-happy everyone is these days.

Just a small correction...1997 3400 V6 (if you're talking about the 3rd gen 4runner).

Thai, I just couldn't help it. Now if someone knows the fraction of cc, they can correct me. :bs: :chnsw:
 
I read the Consumer Reports review and I think the info is based on shakey info. The
Under the catagory: reliability---> the 03 V6 got the highest ratings.

It actually reads "3400 FOUR CAM 24". They took a slightly artistic license, since it is a DOHC not a FOUR CAM. Still 3400 FOUR CAM sounds better than 3378 DOHC 24. Yes, I know since it is a V6 it is techically has 4 CAMS. :confused:

Hey Toyo,

Why do you keep missing the point? This is a 4Runner forum. People don't care about all the other Japanese vehicles. We don't even care about how good the other Toyotas are. We DO care about the 4Runner and it concerns some of us that the V6 4Runner was listed on the "least" list.

I would never buy a Trailblazer, but I know 4 different people with Trailblazers who have zero problems.
