4Runner Mainitenance

I have started doing my maintenance list for my 2008 4Runner at 60,000 miles.

First I would like everyone to think when the last time everyone changed their Cabin Air Filter??? I will attach a pic of my old and cabin air filter. NASTY!!!
So far with the few things I did I finally got 20mpg to show on my Trip Computer!!!! :reddance: Mu old best ever was 17.3mpg. With gasprices so high I am stoked.
So far I did an oil change Mobil1 oil+filter with my good old friend Slick50 50,000 plus additive, properly cleaned my MAF sensor then reset battery and change cabin air filter.
Still to do are clean AFE intake, clean throttle body, change PCV valve for preventative maintenance, fill OME Panasonic battery with distilled water, check tire tread depth and air pressure, check brake pad depth, add slick 50 into gas tank.

If tread depth is low I may get new tires before the summer but after I install daystar spacers so I'll go larger than stock tires. If low pads I'll also do a brake change. Maybe purchase new Optima batttery as I hear they're great but Consumer reports had cheaper low batteries as a Best buy. Get Budbilt armor and rock sliders. Maybe Magnaflo exhaust

She runs so smooth after the oil change it's great.

I am getting a burning/sulfur smell occasionally and am wondering what the hell it is, have to research.

Any advice on the smell???

Already put on Iridiums and used Amsoil 100,000 mile lube for both Diff's an transfer case at 40,000mile so I'm in the clear with that.

Thanks for all the posts and connents to them, between that and my experience with fixing cars for years my 4Runner will be running for 200,000 happy miles!

Yes, pr of it. I also have been noticing it occassionally while driving. Maybe cold engine still warming it up. What is it? I am still under the extended warranty, is it something that Toyota needs to fix?
Also, note the bas****s at Pep Boys broke my glove box pump which slows down the opening of the glove box. So I am hping the dealer will fix that too- I'll just say it's broken.

Next I would tell you to stay far away from the Pep Boy monkeys, as they mostly hire any warm body right off the streets.

I went there once for an oil change when I was new to San Antonio and wasn't sure where to take my car......ONCE. That was enough. They are lucky if I ever set foot in the retail store again....but they do have some good deals now and then.

I hear ya! The store is ok - and they have good deals from time to time. I won't go to any Pep Boys for service, and I just don't think I'll go back to that particular Pep Boys for anything......it was just a bad day.

Yes the Tech's there are low grade but they usually have the parts I need.

Okay we all agree Pep Boys for guys like us SUCKS! I agree I won't use them for service on my vehicle but WILL use them to buy parts.

View attachment 43708Some more pics of the job from today. Yesterday was oil change and MAF sensor clean.
Today was clean off battery metal tips and clips and fix the vibration from the AFE box with some rubber and metal washers on the bolts as there was gaps and the air box with the AFE filter would vibrate under hard acceleration.

Stanleybb50 please let me know what that is, as I said YEP it does happer under a hard acceleration. Thanks man.

Dealer should replace cats for you. I need to get this done too. There's actually a good deal of threads on the subject.

I would tell you to find any place other then your Toyota Dealerships Service Dept. to get anything fixed, meaning getting it fixed right the first time and not getting ripped off.

Look hard for good shops with good people and get things fixed right.:driving:

It is very very hard to find an honest qualified mechanic that provides straight forward service. I also understand the pricey aspect of dealership service departments.

After some years of bad oil changes at Jiffy Lube, bad service at NTB, and rip offs / poor work from Joe Blow 'mechanics'....I use the Toyota dealership that the original owner took the 4runner to...the dealership has the service records...and they know the vehicle...and they know me...and I feel I get good service / quality service every time. I have never had a problem with them. Now is it a little more expensive? Yes...but in my estimation...in almost anything these days...you get what you pay for...you go cheap and you get cheap service / possibly poor service. Now...not all dealerships are the same...I have also played one dealership off another in order to get to a better price and quality of service. My general opinion runs with quality over quantity...I will pay for good reliable service even if it takes longer...in the end...I want things done right the first time. I cannot fathom the business model of the clowns as Jiffy Lube...I would rather pay more and get it done right or do it myself.

I totally agree with you- You get what you pay for(in most cases). I am a disabled Vet and at times I just can't do things at all so I will go to a good dealership or my local mechanic shop/body shop that I've know for years and they stand by their work, especially cause I know the family. They may cost more but they will tell you straight on how the deal is but they have saved me mucho money in some quick repairs stuff when I was selling my old Jeep to get the 4Runner.

Before doing the throttle body cleaning, should I get the spacer for the throttle body??? Are they worth it? It's only like $87..00 but It'd be nice to have a small boost. ANy thoughts???

The sulpher smell is coming from your exhaust, there is a tsb out on it. I took it in to Toyota and had 2 pieces of pipe replaced free as per TSB.
