4runner n00b needs *help*

Hello all,

I recently bought a 98 4runner, and wanted to replace the old Head unit that was in their, with a new one. The one that was their was an old alpine, and I was getting a new Alpine, so easy swap I figured.

Now that I have taken apart the facia to do the swap, my VIP alarm wont arm or lock/unlock the doors. My power door locks do not work at all. The deck wont turn on.

I am at a loss. Ive swapped out my deck before in my 3000gt. Ive helped friends swap out decks in about 3 or 4 other cars. Never run into this.

Any ideas?

Sounds to me like you possible crossed a wire and blew a fuse, or maybe you unplugged something. The head unit should not affect any of those features...unless the original installer did something crazy and hooked it into the alarm...which makes no sense at all. I would check all the fuses in the fuse box and see if any of them are blown... other than that don't know what to tell you, like I say the Head unit should not affect that stuff.... wait sorry, just reread your post? All that stopped and you haven't done anything to the stereo but pull the fascia off around it?

Sound like something definatley was unplugged or a fuse blown...

I put the new wire harness on and removed the facioa, but thats it. Im going to recheck all my fuses again. There are two spots for them not 3 right?

Thios sucks. I didnt touch wires other then the ones for the deck.

Symtpons:
PDL wont work
Alarm wont work
Turn signals wont work

WTF...
The only fuses that I cant figure out how to check is the non blade type fuses. They dont seemt o come out. This is madening =\

Did you not find any blown fuses? I know one time I accidentally blew all my speakers in my car at once. I was plugging in the rca cables that ran to my amp into my head unit preouts, and since I didn't have a lot of room to see what I was doing I accidentally sandwiched a thin little metal wire (that I dont know what its purpose served in the first place) between the male and female end on both the left and right rca cable pretty much making a bridge between the two which instantly blew all my speakers... didn't know it happend until I tried to use it and I had no sound...then I discovered my problem.

Sometimes its just the little things that go wrong and we don't realize. Repeat the orignal process, or maybe attempt to backtrack what you already did, and reinstall the old head unit...who knows, it may fix it, it may not, it will at least help you make another step forward as to figuring out what is wrong.

Check for any sort of loose wire, frayed connection, pinched wire, crossed wire, etc. If you can't find anything then you might have to resort to paying someone to figure it out. But I find that usually when something random like that happens it is fairly easy to spot the culprit.

Did the other installer get the power for the HU from the factory harness or did he tap the fuse box?

I'm going to go along with blown fuse too... I'm thinking you either grounded something yourself, or he had a bare wire back there that brushed something metal.

Or it's possible that when pushing the HU in the dash you simply unplugged a wire harness somewhere.

Try pulling the HU and unplugging it and trying it then. Then scour the inside of the dash for a plug that's loose or unplugged, and check every fuse inside the truck and out under the hood.

Thanks for the suggestions. All things considered, I figured it had to be a fuse somewhere. I rechecked them all and sure enough there was one that was blown. The first time I was checking them I got interupted a few times, so one of those times I must have skipped passed the blown fuse when I went back to checking.

Now that everythings working, I must say a good deck can make a huge improvment to the stock sound system. Its like a night and day improvment over the old ancient alpine deck that was in there. I thgohut the stock speakers were hopeless, but this made them tolerable till I can upgrade them.

Thought it had to be a fuse... glad that is all it was and that you got it all worked out.. I have been there before though, freaking out because you can't figure it out, but once you do, man what a relief.
