4runner Newbie - your maintenance expertise needed

I just bought an 2004 4runner limited, the v8, with 14k miles, brand new looking, for my wife (too bad she doesn't like it). I have some maintenance questions:

1. I need to change the oil soon, will convert to Mobil1, but in looking for the oil filter i see it's located in a goofy position. What's the best way to get this thing off, from the top of the engine compartment or underneath? I thought you guys can save me a couple of busted knuckles. Also, I saw on another thread that there's another model that has a drain plug just underneath the filter, is this true for the v8?

2. RTFM...is there a maintenance manual i can find for this car? I looked on amazon and don't see anything for 2004's...

Congrats on your purchase! If it didn't come with an owners manual in the glove box ( which has some maintenance procedures in it) you can buy one from Toyota. All the publications they have are far superior to anything after market IMHO.
From what I have read there is a shield over the filter which makes it hard to get at. I don't know how hard it is to remove as I have the V6 with the filter on top. Don't worry your wife will come around. It's a really great SUV!

You have to remove the skid plate to change a filter. Take 4 nuts off then swing plate down, otherwise oil spilled on the plate will cause messy engine compartment.

I changed mine not to long ago with Mobil 1 truck and suv. I also went ahead and used the Mobil 1 oil filter. It's great so far! As for the filter, you will have to remove the skid plate as mentioned above. Filter is kinda tricky, but not too bad. All the information and questions that I needed are on this forum!

Removing the skid plate makes the filter change a breeze.
Not a hassle for me. EZ pickens!
