4Runner noob, good deal?

Hey guys, new to 4Runners, I just totaled out my 2002 Audi A4 and was looking to get an S4, but couldn't find a good deal right now. Im in need of a vehicle ASAP, but don't want to get something Ill dread making payments on. Ive always liked 4Runners, and I trust Toyota quality. Just wanted to know if you 4Runner experts think this is a good deal. And if there is anything I should know. Thanks in advance.

I'm no expert but that sounds like a good deal to me. I paid $14150.00 out the door for my 03 Ltd V8 with 84000 miles back in august. by the I hope nobody was hurt.

I absolutly love it. The V8 is wonderful. I haven't had any issues with mine at all. unlike the explorer that I had before the 4runner. if you have any questions I'm sure you'll find them just by poking around this forum.
 
The V6 2003 had a few problems, but the V8 did pretty well. Also, the V8 came with a 5 speed, while the V6 had a 4 seed automatic. By the way, that is really low miles for a 03. That color Pacific Blue was only made for a few years and I consider to be a rather nice color on the 4Runner.

The V8 has a timing belt that needs to be changed at 90,000 miles. If it is a 4WD, which it looks like it is, it is full time 4WD. Other V8 owners can chime in, but I would expect around 16 MPG. It looks like a pretty nice 4Runner, but it does have some age on it, so expect a few problems down the road.

It looks like a pretty nice 4Runner. That is a fairly good price, but for the age, you might asked for a lower price. Take a nice long test drive, if you check the trip computer for the avg. miles per gallon, my computer is off about 2.5 MPG, so take that into account. I would reset the computer and see what kind of mileage you are getting. The V8 has been around before 2003 on other vehicles and is a very nice engine. I would think if it checked out, it should has lots of life left in that vehicle.

And yeah that color seems to be pretty rare, as I haven't seen any others like that. And yes it is the 4wd model. And man I can't get away from these timing belt issues! The Audis have that too, had to spend $700 to get that done on it.

For the price, it seems reasonable to me but I'm sure you could talk it down a bit. Mine was $25,000 and I walked out with a new 4R with 25,500 miles for the wonderful price of $20,200. :D

I don't think I'll ever buy another car than a 4Runner, as long as they keep building them. :D

Make sure you check the carfax!!

Damn, I didn't think you could talk dealerships down $5000, thats alot. What do you think I could get them down to?

Also Carfax checked out good, thanks.
 

My guess for a 2003 you could find a couple scratches, a couple dings, and what not and get it down to $13,500-$14,500.

The reason I got mine talked down so much was because of a ding in the back that was pretty noticeable and because there was an issue on the carfax. It was a big risk buying something with a carfax report but I took it to a collision center and they couldn't find ANYTHING wrong with it so i took the chance and don't regret it.

I looked at that exact T4R and if you bought it you would be the fourth owner IIRC. That just seems a little sketchy to me. I also mentioned the 4th owner thing to them and they got very rude with me.

I just bought my 03 a few weeks ago and its solid as a rock with 118k miles on it. The only thing I really ran into in ohio was dealers not wanting to negotiate on the price at all, they tend to get very defensive if you ask for a lower price.

Also, the V8 is an amazing engine. My family has had them in a couple of trucks and they are bulletproof and smooth as silk, plus have tons of power.

Did the dealers at this particular dealership give you guff? How much did you try and offer them?
 
I never got to actually give a price. Once I mentioned the whole four owner thing and maybe coming down on the price and they stopped e-mailing me.

Hmm, well Im gonna go down there on Saturday and look at it. I already have a preapproved loan check so that should give me some extra negotiating power. Id like to walk away after tax and title for no more than $15,000.

Yeah, timing belts can be a hassle, but it is pretty common with a lot of cars. Compaines put them in because they are quiet, cheaper and they can have it turn the water pump because of it's flexibility.

Sure it is a hassle to change it every 90,000 miles. I had a Acura that needed it changed every 60,000 miles. If you want a chain and a 4Runner, buying a 4th gen. V6 will do the trick, as it has a chain.
 
Just so you have a point of comparison -

12 months ago I bought a 2004 V8 Limited for $23k, it had 45k miles at the time and a single owner prior to me. The car was nearly mint condition and had records of being serviced routinely at a dealership. Might be a bit higher in price that you are seeing, but 4Runners are in high demand here in New England (didn't look to see your location).

I love the car, even if I could afford something else extravagant I wouldn't want another.
 
Is that the OTD price? If you add tax, that's a little on the high side. I just got an 04 Limited, V8, 4x4 for under 16k w/ 60k. Plus NAV and sunroof.

I used crazedlist.org to find it, and looked for a good month in the SW/West coast. That's a great site if you're willing to drive .

No thats before tax and title. And I agree thats high. At the very most I'd give them $15,500 OTD.
