What Falls said. It's hard to say which SUV is more capable because different people will say different things. Different terrains will favor one vehicle over the next. In general, i would rate these SUVs above 4runner stock: Range Rover/LR3, Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, Mercedes G500, Hummer H2/H3, Toyota FJ Cruiser, Toyota Land Cruiser/LX470, and Dodge PowerWagon (well, it's a truck). My list does NOT take into account durability and reliability.
In snow, i will have to defer to someone who drives it regularly.

What makes the Land Cruiser and Lexus a good off roader ? I like LC but not the Lexus ....go figure , its all in the name , it just sounds better/tougher....lol
Dodge PW , I thought it was a pick up truck ? Although they have made a few different vehicles with the PW sticker on them.

And according to Car & Driver's testings, the new Wrangler is pretty quiet on the highway too. All of these make it a SUV IMHO.
I prefer the Lexus prior to 2006 because the air suspension on the LX does improve clearance and angles. In 2006, TLC has the active suspension option. I would still prefer Lexus for the memory seats, Mark Levinson stereo, better looking interior (more wood, no tack on aftermarket wood shit), and customer service (& longer warranty).
I did mention above that the Dodge PW is a truck...can you imagine what an animal it would be if it had a Cummins diesel?!!
Hell, it would beat Hummer H1 in off-roading (both big as hell).

Um..........had to chime in here. This is just my humble onion, so take it with a grain of salt, or maybe a few pounds of it. I know we are talking stock-to-stock but............

I would think a stock FJ80 with factory lockers will beat 4runner off-road.
Range Rovers are now fully independent. Reliabilty remains piss poor as always.
TLC100/LX470 may have the same powertrain, but it's construction is not the same. The underbody of TLC100/LX is significantly cleaner (better clearances) along with a heavier duty frame & body. Suspension travel is also better in the TLC/LX.
HP is not everything off-road. Traction devices (lockers, LSD) make a huge difference as does crawl ratio. Therefore, the 4runner has more HP, but it will likely be behind a TLC80 with factory lockers.
You're right about balancing between cargo capacity vs. off-road capability. It all depends on the person behind the steering wheel. Not every trip does one carry max payload. The JK Rubicon (2007) is IMHO the best damn off-roader on the road from the factory.
The H2 will beat 4runner off-road stock vs. stock, except in tight places. The H3 will beat 4runner too if it is equiped with Adventure Pkg.
Although H2 and H3 are based on Chevy platforms, GM has heavily modified them for Hummer. IMHO, GM did more to the Chevy platform than did Toyota for the FJ cruiser from 4runner platform.
