I am thinking about getting either of these two cars: a Lexus GS300, or a 4runner V6 2003 or newer- and I don't know which would be more expensive with gas. I know SUVs don't get as good gas mileage as cars do, but don't Lexus GS300's need premium gas, the most expensive kind? Therefore, which one would be more expensive to fill up? Thanks!

the GS300 definitely gets better gas mileage. probably on average a good 7mpg, give or take. thats basing on epa values for the 2006 gs300, and what i've found in my experience of gas mileage on my 4r, which is a sr5 4wd v6. based on epa values of each, i'd expect an average of 5mpg better for the gs300.. even if the gs300 requires premium, which i think it does, but i'm not sure, you'd probably still be spending less on fuel for it than a 4r. the 4r also has a bigger gas tank, which means more gallons at the tank. you'd probably get similar miles per tank for each, but be using more gallons on the 4r than on the gs.
i'm pretty sure there are members here that have owned or own both, and would be able to give you a more accurate response.

A car or an SUV... What are your needs? You should get back to basics and write a list of your transportation needs.
The SUV will almost always cost more in fuel and maintenance, and insurance costs.

oh, I know RWD sucks in the snow. I've seen many a rwd cars having trouble in the snow, and the first time snow drivers not knowing 1. how to drive in the snow, and 2. that rwd cars suck in the snow. I thought you meant not nearly the bad weather ability because it was a car, not cuz it was rwd. sorry for the misunderstanding. And he didn't specify year (just 2003 or newer), so I mentioned that it had AWD, granted that I believe you are correct, that the GS only came in AWD starting in 06.Koz said:

Also, only on the 2006+ GS300's have better gas mileage... I've read most are getting mid to upper 20's and a few have gotten more than 30mpg. The 2006 GS300 has the 3GR-FE 3.0 V6, a derivative from the 4.0 (1GR-FE) used in the 4Runner.
If it's the older GS300, pre-2005, it has a 2JZ-GE 3.0 I6. The 2JZ is not gas friendly, expect about low to mid 20's at best. When the 2JZ was designed it was designed with performance in mind over feul econmy, thus the GE designation. (The G is performance heads, whereas the F is fuel economy.) My friend has a SC300 and he gets only about 21-22mpg on highway driving with premium.

Oh what the heck, just buy the 4Runner to get into the SUV craze like many of us here on T4R.org did. You can probably count on both hands and a few toes the amount of users on here who took thier 4 Runners off road this month of December.
I keep waiting on a good reason to validate my choice of purchasing a 4 wheel drive vehicle. If mother nature doesn't supply it soon; then I will have to create my own validation. Just knowing the fact that I have 4, Fo, or four sure feet under my truck gives me the confidence that I made the right choice; even if it means I have to eat 2-3 less cans of beanie weenie per week for gas.
I love my 4Runner.......I went through a tank of gas this X-mas weekend just to put some mileage on the sure-footed highway soldier. I've had the truck for 20 months now while putting only 12,896 miles on the odometer. I have a 2nd old 4 banger that I drive to work and for short around the corner trips.
Good luck on your decision.......all I have to say is that getting what you NEED is common sense; but I would personally say to: "Get what you would enjoy and be proud of when driving around town"! The latter statement will make the cleaning, maintenance, and driving experience more appreciative when the car note paying day comes around.

I read the posts here every 5-7 days and sometimes it takes me at least 8 hours to get through them all. I wouldn't trade this experience for nothing. I must find my bottle of visine--I am developing the red eyes!

Thanks for all yalls replies. I really want a 4runner more, but my dad wants me to get the Lexus because it will have better gas mileage and b/c its cheaper. I don't really get why it's cheaper though. You would think a Lexus would be more expensive than a toyota. But I can't find a 4runner for the price my dad wants to pay (I want the 2003 or newer body style), but I can find a lot of Lexus Gs300s. I just wish I was a millionare, then i would get them both, haha.
