GX - 2nd Gen (2010-present) - ClubLexus - Lexus Forum Discussion

For my wife and I, we already had a 4Runner and I was not interested in buying another one that effectively looked identical to the one we had (personal taste) outside of a new informant system.

This being said, the refreshes go 2010-2014, then 2015-2019 and then 2020 had a new front grill and an upgraded interior, the informant system stayed the same, still no Carplay etc.. but the vehicle is largely the same from 2010-2020 (even 21) so for those of you comparing the two you can likely find some very good bargains in the 2015-16 range. This being said, I don't know why but I could not find a late model GX that was not HEAVILY used, it seems the average GX buyer around us really treats the vehicle like a utensil, most had smelly interiors, little dings and dents and scrapes inside that you would expect from an 80k mile car but only had around 20-30k miles. This is why we went with a nearly new one that was a dealer vehicle.

All said, the V8 in the GX really is great and the 4Runner would be the holy grail with it installed over the V6 it has.

Traded my 4 runner for a cpo gx460.
I prefer the looks of the 4 runner but the gx just feels more refined, comfortable, quieter overall.

The only consideration is if you have really long legs the amount of space to spread your legs wide not long is less due to the dash being wider around your knees feet etc.

I prefer the full time 4wd and the looks of the gx vs limited is a wash.

I have a 2016 Limited and would like to get the GX next.

GX overall is just more to my liking. It drives better, amenities/features/trim is nicer, I enjoy the V8, and I also like the Torsen based 4WD system on the GX/Limited/4th gens better. It's just a more versatile system for use in all conditions.

I'm just holding off for some type of infotainment update. As soon as Apple Carplay is is available I will make the switch. No rush for the change, it's more of a want than a need... the 2016 is still holding strong.

I still off-road, but I don't get a crazy as I used to. It's getting to the point I dislike driving around a heavily modified rig for the 1-2 camping trips a year I go on now. I'm actually starting to miss having a well performing road truck for the rest of the time.

We have both. The 4runner serves is purpose but the 4.6 6 speed tranny and amities in the GX are far superior to the 4Runner. Don’t get me wrong the 4runner is an amazing machine. Just know if you plan on lifting adding 285s and a bit of weight on the 4runner a regear is almost necessary. IMO its a v6, don’t plan on racing anywhere. I love my 4runner, its not going anywhere anytime soon.

Fuel economy is essentially the same for us. 16 on 4runner 18 on gx with premium gas.

My only gripe on the gx is there is no switch to lock the hvac controls to one zone. The moment my kids touch the switch in the back the one zone I set up front splits into 3. Ugggg!!! The heated and cooled seats are a game changer as well. Only heated seats in my 16 trail premium 4runner.

If I were in your shoes I’d go GX and a tav spec stage 1 build from tavllc.com as well as a cbi low pro bumper of course. Add crawl control for $250ish (plug & play) and wow what a build!
