4runner over heating

well i changed the thermostat today the one on it looks pretty new alrdy and i drove it 80miles on hwy and did fine and started going through town and stop and go and the temp started riseing just a little so i can bet its the clutch fan cause when i start it first thing in the morns it dosent make the roaring sound like my v6 4runner and v8 tundra.


And the turck that i was going to get the fan from has only about 56k miles on it before it was wrecked so i can probly get the fan for like 20 bucks

Since my 3.4 is on bedrest waiting the new timming belt and pullys i figerd since i have alrdy took the radator out i would just try it in my 2.7 4cly to see if it would over heat and i swaped them and drove around like a bat out of hell and it dose'nt seem to be over heating now so i think it was the raditor all along and not the fan.

Cause i noticed even when the temp guage would show normal when driven then when i stop and turn it off it will be boiling over real bad so that lead me to think it was the radator.

This one had a hole in it and i paid a repair shop 40 bucks awhile back to patch it now i have to get a new one any way :ybrick:

If the truck overheats at stopped or slow-moving idle, and cools when in motion, it strongly suggests a bad fan clutch. It's an easy fix.

A healthy fan clutch makes a definite roar at initial start-up for a few seconds. If the truck is overheating, try and stop the fan (carefully!) with a rolled newspaper or magazine. If you can, clutch is shot.

So I have a 95 runner with the 3VZE 3.0 liter and it overheats when I come to a stop light but then cools down when I drive off again. I've done everything I can think of to fix the problem including a new fan clutch! New Radiator, thermostat, radiator cap, did a coolant flush, purged the air out of the system cleaned the condenser fins, etc. It's running with the factory fan shroud and the fan blades are good. Any thoughts??? I don't think it's a head gasket because I'm not getting any other symptoms of a head gasket. Not losing any coolant, not overheating while driving, no white crap under the oil cap. This problem is driving me crazy and I can't drive the thing in peace! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Could it be a blockage in the engine or a bad temp sensor or something???

Hi I have an 05 4runner. I have been having the overheating problem also. I have replaced the thermostat. Ratiator, and replaced the the fluid in the clutch fan. Then for another fan clutch. And still have the problem. Did you ever find the solution to the problem?

When purging for air, you need to have the front of the truck elevated about the height of a curb is good.

yes i did find the problem. the last owner hired a crappy mechanic to change a burnt valve and so they changed the head gasket while they were in there. the mechanic used two left side head gaskets (don't ask why) and so some of the fluid flow ports were blocked on the right side head.

changed the head gaskets with a high quality gasket and the engine has been running like a dream ever since! i'd check all head gasket symptoms. these engines shouldn't overheat just with minor issues i've found. probably something bigger. the fan will roar pretty loud when the clutch really grabs hold. could be air in the system or even a water pump issue if you've ruled out head gasket. good luck!
