4runner PRO or TRD trail Premium

hey guys.

is been an while since i posted..

with my current 3rd gen as my daily, the mileage has been going up and up everyday.. in the last 2 months, i logged about 4200 miles... and now I'm around 355k miles..

I have been in the market looking for an 5th gen.. The Pro's is what i have been looking at but everywhere in califronia is asking an arm and an leg for it.. some places are looking for $57k for an PRO... that's absurd..

i found something i like the other day...

is this

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/cto/d/2016-toyota-trail-premium/6347283245.html

it looks almost like an Pro without the added price..

is it worth it to hold out for an PRO or go the build route with the trail Premium and add the Pro's accessories..

any major differences for the PRO and Trail?

thanks

Just FYI, that is too much for a used 2016 with 13k. Yes it is worth it I just wouldn't pay it. You can go to a dealer in another state and pick up a new 17 for that.

California dealers are the worst at selling TRD PROs. When I was looking to buy one they wanted a 10K mark up. I really really wanted the quicksand TRD PRO love that color but there was no way I was gonna pay that much for it. Stock 4Runners are extremely capable, but if you are gonna modify it I wouldn't recommend the TRD PRO. They do hold their value more than of the other model. I ended up with the Trail Premium with KDSS, and I couldn't be happier.

I think it comes down how you are going to use the T4R. If you are going to keep it stock, go with the Pro. If you are really going to wheel it, go ORP. I bought the ORP, added sliders and full skids, SSO Slimline bumper with a light bar and Warn winch and OME BP-51 shocks and springs and still under the MSRP of a new TRD Pro. It is now as or more capable than a stock TRD Pro and I have no regrets.

If you gonna mod, get TRD offroad. If you gonna keep it stock, get TRD Pro.

This. I got the Pro simply because I didn't want a sunroof, and I wanted the Softex upholstery. And I would have wanted to upgrade to the Pro wheels & similar suspension on a OR Premium if I had gotten one. If I had found a Premium without a sunroof and very few other options, I would have gone that route. I WOULD NOT pay any "market demand fee" or any kind of premium for the Pro.

Exact same situation for me too. I am happy with my Trail Premium with KDSS too.

For me, it will be the new daily driver. I want an rig I can take the snow and play with along with road trips and camping.

My girl has an cube but not enough room to roam around.

If I get the pro, I'm going to most likely add armour to it and same thing with the red off road.

Is the kdss worth it vs the pro?

I was in the same boat as you deciding on an ORP and a Pro. took me about a week before pulling the trigger. The ORP was around $43k out the door and the Pro was around $47k out the door. I looked at the ORP and didn't like that it had the KDSS option. I asked the sales person if they could special order the ORP without the the KDSS but they said that it couldn't be done. I didn't like the KDSS because if the KDSS where to break or leak it would probably cost a lot to have it serviced or fixed. Ended up putting a $5000 Deposit for a Super White TRD Pro. The wait for it to come in is about 6 to 8 months. now just waiting for it to come in as the salesperson said that only 5 comes in every month.

Kdss is worth it. I was sold on it years ago when I rode in my buddy's land cruiser. It firms up the suspension during cornering. It is a night and day difference in handling. You can drive like a complete Jack rabbit on the road, and the suspension stays planted.

I'm not worried about maintenance or repair costs, mainly because its a fairly simple system and Toyota has been installing it in their land cruisers for years. Worse case scenario, you can remove it completely.

Basically, I wanted both lockers and KDSS, so there was only one trim that has both of these features available...trail/OR. The rest of the stuff I can upgrade fairly easily.

Sounds like a good match for the TRDP. Keep it stock, throw some armor on and enjoy it. If you plan to rip the suspension out and mod the heck out of it, I would say ORP may be the better route so you can save some $ for parts.

Couldn’t agree with you more on this!

a 15 tundra trd pro sold yesterday, so the 18 trd pro calvary blue is at $44k out the door. It is about 3k off msrp very tempted on this purchase. Comes with the protection film and the exhaust tip options. My wife has a 17 sr5 premium and I love it as well.

If you have to pay that kind of premium for a TRDP, than just buy a Trail or a now a TRDOR and mod it into a TRDP, it's significantly cheaper. If you have to have the TRDP suspension, grill, skids, etc., you can just buy them and throw them on, plus hood scoop (adds about 200 hp) and a moon roof.

I got the Pro thinking I would leave stock. I thought wrong ;)

Like everybody has said, get the ORP, add bumpers skids wheels lift gear lights and still be cheaper than the Pro.

No brainer IMO.

So ridiculous...my TRDP is $45 otd now and when I asked about an ORP WITH KDSS, they said they all come without it and it would have to be a special order, 3-4 months wait

and that TRDP wait is ridiculous, I ordered mine ~4 weeks ago, it's 2-3 days fro being in my driveway

I got mine on the lot, all varries by region, dealer, and the "deal" lol

My end, I'm screwed in Cali.

Dealer puts it on cars.com app and after I email them. Is sold. Why put it online when the car is sold before going on the app.

All dealers around me is jacking the price up hella bad.

$44 is the cheapest I seen and some of the dealers are marking it $5k-$10k plus

Sun Roof

I would get the Pro and add the sunroof. That shouldn't be too expensive. Toyota knows how to market some of their models in limited quantities to extract the consumer surplus from some.
