4runner SR5 or Sport?

i just bought my first 4runner and i'm stoked! after driving my brother's 2000 4runner around for almost a year i fell in love with it. anyways mine is a 2005 SR5/Sport... and here is my question.. i'm not positive if it is an SR5 or Sport model. how can you tell? the runner has SR5 badges on both sides but the vehicle has certain features the sport has. i know you can get the SR5 with upgraded features but i still would like to know. if it is a sport model should it have "Sport" badges? any help would be great!

Well you should always use carfax before buying a used vehicle but anyways, go to Carfax.com and put the VIN # in on the first page. It will tell you the year and model of your vehicle along with how many records it has... for free

i bought it from a family friend who was the first owner so i think i can trust him i went on carfax.com and searched the vin and it says it's an SR5/Sport Edition... so does that just mean it is a Sport Edition? sorry i'm a noob here haha.

If the emblems on the side say SR5 then I would say it's just an SR5. Does it have a hood scoop, or a flat hood? No hood scoop = SR5.

That would probably be the easiest way to tell. I would still decode the Vin number though .

Another dead give away it's an SR5 is the black matte/unpainted mirror housings. That and the aforementioned badging and no hoodscoop.

Don't know about the US, but in Canada, the SR5 has no double decker trunk thing and the Sport Edition does. Also, the SR5 doesn't have hood scoop.

That's just the thing. It doesn't have the hood scoop, it has the black matte side mirrors, and it has the SR5 emblems. The only thing is when i search the VIN it comes up as an SR5/Sport Edition... is the VIN search just saying that because it doesn't go into detail on the exact model? I'm pretty sure it's just an SR5 but was just curious why the VIN search said it was a Sport Edition...

Also i noticed that some of the 4th gen's have different emblems even if they are the same model. Does that have anything to do with the year of the runner? Thanks for all the help. Just a curious noob here.

The only thing is when i search the VIN it comes up as an SR5/Sport Edition...

Look underneath the truck at about the spot where front door meets rear. See if there is a large canister on the outside face of the frame with lines running to it. Canister means Sport (XREAS). No Canister, SR5.

mine's a 2005 sport, it doesnt have SR5 badge, and another way to tell is if you have 17" rims.

I have seen SR5 models called SR5 Sport Editions on websites that sell parts before. I think it's just a generic branding for it. Either that, or it's misinformation on their part. Either way don't worry about it, you have an SR5.

The VIN decoder unforunately does not differentiate between SR5 and Sport Edition. Toyota for unknown reasons has a different digit that indicates whether the 4Runner is a Limited or not.

The hood scoop check is the easiest. Then followed by the black fabric interior. SR5s are gray or beige.

Correct the decoder does not have a code for Sport Ed. Reason being that the Sport Edition really starts out as a SR5 and has option package SP added to it. Toyota does indeed have 4 model #'s for the Sport Ed (8646, 8676, 8666, 8686) but when looking at the model code, for example GRN210L-GKAGKA, the bolded letter is the Grade...in 2005 either G for SR5 or Z for Limited.
