You just need to move north! I probably should get a new one - mine is many many years old and has been used 100s of times. Now that I think of it I should DEFINITELY replace it. I just hadn't thought of it before.

I live on the side of the mountain so there's always people to rescue in the winter. Even when I was truckless it lived in the back of my Audi and I would yank 2 or 3 vehicles every winter. It's REALLY fun to yank a stuck jeep out with a little Audi!

I won't give anyone crap about having a snatch strap. They're miracle workers. I used one once to yank my buddy's FJ40 out of a snowy ditch (I was the one that put it there!) with a Honda CRX. On snow! Momentum is a powerful thing.

I didn't mean to imply that anyone in particular should/shouldn't do something. Just that there is a powerful groupthink on here that pushes people to buy stuff they don't need and probably won't use much if at all. People come here with stars in their eyes about offroad adventures that probably won't happen and if they do can probably be handled with a stock truck. And a lot of this stuff is REALLY expensive for what you get. I just saw the price on one of those little ARB refrigerators that are so popular - good lord! And I thought a Yeti was expensive.

I can certainly agree that when I got my 4Runner 5 months ago I did not intend to perform many mods but due to this forum and seeing other rigs I've definitely bought $8-10K of stuff that is likely entirely unnecessary for my everyday needs but it makes me happy so I'm fine with it . I'm blessed to be young, well employed, and not married so I can be pretty reckless with my money. It's undeniable this forum has caused a nice dent in my bank account and I wouldn't have it any other way!

I have been patient with my build so far. Really only adding what I need based on experiences that I have had. I have put 35k on the stock suspension, and this is not my daily driver (thank you company work truck!). Many miles off pavement, and it's going to be a welcome upgrade. "The Dark Side of the Forum" is only as bad as you let it be. It can tear your wallet apart in seconds. But at the end of the day, only buy what you need or something that will likely prevent you from needing to spend more $ on a tow/recovery/repair if you didn't otherwise have it. And DON'T let the forum tell you what you need :thumb3:

Do whatever you want with your truck. It is yours.. don't give a crap what others think and don't judge anyone else for what they do (or don't) with theirs.

With that said, be aware that a lot of these modifications have big downsides. The big ones are weight, aerodynamics, rolling resistance, and lack of OEM reliability (need for maintenance and service...). Rarely is any change all positives. There is usually some downsides that you have to consider and determine if the juice is worth the squeeze for you....

Absolutely. Is the juice worth the squeeze? Maybe yes, maybe no depending on what your conditions are. And one thing many people don't think about on the front end is ALL of the factors that go into a modification and the snowball effect it can have with "well I added this, and now I need that because of it..." (i.e. lift and UCA's). I wrestled with exactly how I wanted to modify my suspension for months to balance out that pro vs. con ratio.

One of the things I have enjoyed most about this forum is actually meeting a ton of members IN PERSON. I've off-roaded with many, I've camped with a few, and I've met a few in random parking lots to swap gear and what not. It's cool to see what folks have done,want to do, and put a face with a screen name, more folks should try it.

My favorite part of the forum is playing the "spot the wife" game in photos. Generally the staged "off road" shots of these 4Runners have an irritated wife in the passenger seat playing Facebook on her phone while they wonder why their stupid husband is taking picture of his own car again.

Due to this forum, I had a big long shopping list already made when I ordered my 4r. Luckily i started to come to my senses! My list started out with a pelfreybilt bumper, a 30" blackoak light bar for it, and of course a warn winch, a gobi roof rack and a 40" blackoak light bar for it, roto pax, an arb 2500 awning, a pair of duallies for the back of the roof rack, maxtrax, arb on board air, c4 sliders, and the rci full skid package. I was prepared to order everything and thought lets just do 1 thing at a time and the only thing I ordered was my c4 sliders before I got it. Besides the sliders, the only things I've done are a 30" blackoak light bar with Rago behind the grill mounts, a new viair compressor to replace my old cig. compressor which has been heaven sent, maxtrax because most of the time I'm out solo, went down from the arb 2500 awning to the 2000 (ordered), and went from the heavy gobi with the stupid long wait times to a prinsu 7/8 rack (ordered tonight and half the cost)which should suit my needs just fine. Realistically, the only thing I think is left that I will get is some rotopax for some of my my remote adventures which I don't take too often so can wait and all my other recovery gear I already owned. But! The next greatest thing might be posted right around the corner by somebody and I won't be able to live without it
