Feeling a little superior to us common folk are we? And condescending enough to suggest what people really "need"? 40 years ago I made do with some of what you listed because it was all I could afford. I've reached an age and point in life where I can afford to do what I couldn't back then. And who am I hurting by doing so? But I do appreciate your need to look down your nose at us rubes. It helps reinforce one of the reasons why I don't post as much in here anymore.

I agree that there's a sweet spot to be found and it largely differs from person to person.

My girlfriend recently asked me if I wanted to get a rooftop tent too and my reply was, "Not even by my slightly biased standards can I justify a brick on the roof that we're going to use maybe 1-2x per year at most." She was happy to find that I haven't fallen head first down the rabbit hole.

I'm trying to balance buying things before I need them and buying things after I need them. I'd hate to get myself stuck somewhere all alone and think, "Man, I wish I had a xyz right now."

My solution now is to simply avoid things that my vehicle isn't prepared for (e.g. going into mud without someone around that can pull me out) and if there's something I really want to do, buy the right gear for it, then tackle it again. Well, that and I'm cognizant of driving dynamics (accelerating/braking/handling) and overall range, which has put a pretty firm upper bound on my modifications so far.

People ask me about my RTT all the time, I tell them how much I love it then explain how bad they are if you like to spend more than one night in the same place. It's excellent for me and has more than paid for itself given how much I've slept up there versus a hotel, my efficiency of travel is astronomical.

His 4Runner has probably been through more states than 99% of the folks on here. I can attest first hand that he offroads that truck having met up with him in Moab, not to mention all the pictures at the lone star jamborees he has posted.

I don't have any of those, but a funny story regarding the '95 TA I referenced earlier. The car when purchased was supercharged via a ProCharger P600B. The intent was always to make as much horsepower as possible and I was all in to the commitment to do so by spending tens of thousands of dollars and countless hours. One non power producing mod I wanted to make was a vanity plate stating "LV2BBLWN". My wife (then girlfriend) took one look at it and told me if I got that she would never ride in the car with me. I never got the vanity plate, nor did I respond that it was a good thing she didn't ride w/ me because the passenger's seat wasn't the appropriate placement of ballast.

My favorite part of the forum is playing the "spot the wife" game in photos. Generally the staged "off road" shots of these 4Runners have an irritated wife in the passenger seat playing Facebook on her phone while they wonder why their stupid husband is taking picture of his own car again.

Your knowledge of punctuation must stop just short of your appreciation for irony, since I was pointing out the irony of you telling another poster that you have reached a point in life where you "need / want" that stuff, but then having a default signature photo of that stuff in use in a handicapped space in a parking lot.

Probably would be a more convincing argument if the signature photo was your truck in an environment not also accessible by a Smart car. But what do I know, I didn't even use periods in my above post!

I'm in the process of signing my life over to become a slave to marriage. Prior to "popping the question" I had all the financial freedom to buy whatever I wanted. Looking back now, I will admit that 70% of the crap I bought was not needed.

I have a light bar sitting under my bed because I will need it for off-roading at night. In the year that I've own my T4R, I never went off-roading past 5pm. The sun sets at 8PM-ish here in SoCal.

I bought an Ipad mini to support my off-roading GPS. The iPad mini now serves as an internet browser for my fiance.

Now I WANT a roof rack to carry my imaginary RTT, gas tanks and other recovery gear.

Let's just say my fiance put a stop to all my madness, and rightfully so. :whip:

Everyone's comfort level of debt is different. I buy what I can afford or can realistically save for. The Classifieds here have helped a lot. I got great deals on my ladder and roof rack from T4R members. Thanks.

But there is some cool factor and "keeping up with the Jones" mentality that comes into play. We're all into our vehicles here and people like spending money on what they're in to. Whether it be fishing, collecting, golfing, whatever; we're going to spend our money on it.

And the ladder was my wife's idea. I use my sliders more to reach my roof but the ladder looks cool. [emoji6]

The sad part is this particular recovery strap also rode in the back of my '66 CJ5 (real off road rig) for a long time and has never been used at all. :wacko:
