4Runner Tuner??

I have a Vance & Hines FP3 for my Harley, it plugs into the data port and has more capability than I can ever use. It blu tooths to my phone and I can do tunes to the ECM and and either auto tune the motor or do manual tuning to the ECM and flash the ECM. Is there a product that you know of or use to tune your motor? I have to imagine this technology exists to fine tune the motor vs going to a tuner and doing a dyno test. Anyone??

First off, do you have the V6 or V8?

Either way, there isn't any device you can use that changes anything with the ECU. Think of it like Toyota already factory-tuned your truck. Other than a URD AFR sensor calibrator which you would need to adjust on a dyno unless URD has a profile for your intake/exhaust setup. A supercharger will net you the best gains, probably the best gains for your dollar too.
 
Nobody reflashes these ECUs,even on older (pre-OBD2,pre-1996) Toyota vehicles. Toyota doesn't seem to like anyone non-corporate screwing around with their ECUs like other manufacturers.

This is incorrect. There is a guy down here in Maryland that can flash just about anything. He has an excellent reputation and has recently added Toyota's to his list of happy customers.

His name is Frank Smith and he works at Tuning Tech FS (TTFS in Crofton, MD)

Im most likely going to get mine done here real soon after I recoup some funds from my header install.

No manufacturer likes the aftermarket tinkering with their ECU. Nobody gives out open world software and say's go at it.

The makes/model that get aftermarket tuning support are because the aftermarket wants it (i.e. Hondata for Honda's K20 and K24 platform from past experience). The demand just isn't there for the 4Runner for someone to indulge into decoding the ECU for tuning, let alone the availability of power mods to merit the need.

Toyota's North America product line just doesn't have anything modders want. The Supra/2JZ is old and has its existing aftermarket support line. The FR-S which is mehh.

This I've got to see. Let us know if he's actually reflashing your existing ECU or piggybacking it. He may already reflash Scion FRS/Toyota 86s but I believe those use Subaru engine management, not Toyota.

There was a handful of tuners (can count them with one hand LOL) that actually reflashed MkIV supra ECUs, but even that wasn't too popular especially with the advent of aftermarket "plug & play" engine management. That was a shame too, there weren't any failures with those Tectom-reflashed Toyota ECUs, couldn't say that with old AEM boxes...I've got my G-Force/Tectom ECU safely stored away until I get my poopra running.
 
That's cool, hope they do a 4th-gen soon, quite curious what kind of gains a good tune will achieve with other breathing mods like headers/y-pipe/exhaust.

The 5th gen they did was one of the owners of GT Peace. I just had them do DT headers, custom y-pipe and magnaflow cat back on my 04 V8 and am going to have him tune it soon. I will definitely post the results if/when I get this done.
 
Yeah, again I am coming from a Harley point of view that does in fact offer fine tuning. I know I am talking apples and oranges but what I was able to to with my HD motor I was thinking perhaps this technology is around for our trucks. I do have the V-8. After 13 years of running strong, my guess is that its probably out of spec so that thought process was because I have added a different exhaust (like on my HD) and a different air intake (like my HD) that I can then use a product to auto/manual tune the motor with the new mods. Just a thought....the technology exists today for motorcycles, wasn't sure about our beloved 4Runners.
 
The technology exists of course, but there has to be enough demand for a tuner to spend time developing it. When the LML Duramax came out in 2011, people thought the ECU would NEVER get cracked. Then it did, because there was enough demand to pay for the hundreds and maybe even thousands of hours it took to do it. My LML makes about 530 wheel hp with nothing but tuning, a lift pump, and air intake and 4" straight pipes. Then the same thing happened with the 2013 Ram Cummins, and sure enough, someone (I think Bully Dog) eventually figured out how to unlock it. Because the demand and money was there.

BUT, there's not enough demand from us to fund it like there is from people in the diesel world or the import world. We're kinda more focused on chassis and suspension performance, and people have spent time developing that for us because it's profitable. I truly wish there was a performance market for these the way there is for diesel trucks. If I could get a modern diesel with tuning potential in a 4R, I'd be all over it.

Nah, I wish I had now since I have no idea what kind of power loss there is with all this drivetrain and heavy wheels and tires. But I never thought I'd be putting this thing on the dyno in the first place either lol. Maybe once TTFS gets some more 4runners coming there way there will be a stock V8 4runner that I can compare numbers with. Im hoping the loss isnt more than 20% because these numbers may look terrible if so.

I see you have a Unichip, how's that working out for you? When I had the '05 Tundra 4.7l I read some good things and some bad things about it on tundrasolutions.

I don't remember all the details about the bad things, but there were enough I didn't buy it.
 
Here are 2 great links to V8 4Runner dyno results. 1 is with the vvti and one isn't.

VVTI-less 2wd V8: Max power = 191 HP, Max Torque = 253 ft-lbs
VVTI 4wd V8: Max power = 213 HP, Max Torque = 249 ft-lbs
This is assuming a lot if we are wanting to compare the numbers, but they might work as a starting point.
 
With my super heave 6 ply 33s I was able to put down 202hp and 301 lb ft of torque. It was an increase of 14hp and 33lb ft from when I came in. Also the tuner changed some setting in the trans map to make it shift a bit quicker. They had to pull some crazy software out, but it was so worth it.
