I am sure this has been discussed before, but the search engine did not lead me readily to the right threads. I am in the market for a DD that can go offroad. Everything else being equal, I would probably go with a Toyota over am American car. The quality of the Toyota is probably higher, and the service personnel better trained. (As an aside, it is amazing how little American car sales people know about their cars compared to foreign cars, in my experience). But everythign is far from equal. The premium for the Toyota can hit 50% for the same year, miles, etc. The 4runner is not that much better. Am I missing something?

The 4runner is that much better because it will last twice as long and is made at a much higher quality.

What years are you considering for both? This will help narrow it down better for the discussion.
Well, I just checked on autotrader, and compared to the GC, the prices turn out not to be that different for 2008's. Maybe I have developed Alzheimers? Another possibility is that I compared the 4Runner to Liberty's by accident, which would not be comparing apples to apples. So I will check out Toyotas after all. Thanks for the feedback. I am going to post again asking for general advice.
Well, another reason I may have gotten such a price difference in the past is geographic. I live half time on each coast. When I checked prices in the San Diego area they came in lower (and there were fewer of them) than those in the Baltimore area. There may be more 4WD demand in Baltimore. Also, with a V8 the Toyota prices seem to jump more than a V8 on a Jeep.

If you're keeping it stock then JC. It keeps your pocket & wallet heavier. If you're modding it, then 4R. But your pocket & wallet will be lighter.
I bought a 2007 jeep grand cherokee brand new and had it for 2 years with 50K on it, below is the list of parts i had to change in that time
-transmission
-Front differnetial
-Rear differential
-two wiper motors
-right rear ABS seansor
-throttle body sensor
-front control arms
-twop ignition coils
-shifter assembly
-gas pedal assmebly after it got stuck down- for real not just the floor mat cause, it happened to others on the forum i was on.
-driver and passenger window motors
The car stranded me twice. I had it in so many times for squeaks and rattles.
The list is problaly longer but i had it in so much i can't even remember. Now i own a 4runner for about a year and i haven't had a problem yet.

Drove a 2008 4Runner today and liked it quite a bit. My experience with Americna cars, including my current Ford Escape, is that they are decent cars, but don't have the quality control (the Prius issues notwithstanding) that Toyota's have. I owned a Prius, BTW, 70,000 trouble free miles and dirt cheap to keep. Lousy seats though for those of us over 6'. Also, Toyota's sales and service staff are more on top of their game (that is true even when the same person owns the Toyota and Ford dealership).

I'm a Jeep fan too - to an extent. From an off road standpoint, nothing from the factory compares to the ability of a Rubicon. To get a Toyota just to that point (SAS w/ HD axles, dual selectable lockers, geared-down t-case, and roll cage) would cost thousands just to match the ability of a stock Rubi. But from a reliability standpoint (if it's a DD also), I'd take a 15 year old Toyota before I'd take a 5 year old Jeep.

Toyota just makes crappy frames.
