4Runner v Tundra offroad

I know the 4Runner will be better off road due to its shorter wheel base and narrower profile, but I am wondering how much real world difference that makes. (At this point I only have modest off road experience.) Assuming I want to limit myself to moderate off roading (no rock climbing), would I still find the Tundra's size very limiting?

Depends on the trails but here in Colorado a Tundra would take some abuse to the sides due to alot of tree branches would be rubbing on it. Longer wheelbase would cause some issues too thus is why you rarely see too many full size trucks on the trails here.

It really depends on the trail in my opinion. My 4Runner starts feeling much bigger than my old Jeep did as the trail narrows or a need tight turns.

My T4R doesn't feel huge until I have it out on the trails here in WV. The few times I'd driven a Tundra on the highway, it felt huuuuge. I imagine it feels even larger on the trail. I'm sure the actual difference in ability is marginal, but the perception is probably pretty big.

Size is a biggie. In addition, the other stuff that the Tundra lacks vs. a 4runner: rear locker (only on 4runner TE), A-TRAC, CRAWL, KDSS (vs. rear leaf on Tundra), and much better angles (esp. breakover!!).

weight is a huge this as well as what thai said above...

Dodge cummings owners joke that you can get stuck in one of their trucks in wet grass. Pickups have terrible weight distribution and the rear wheels just want to spin, esp. with a torquey 5.7... A tundra would suffer serious body damage as well on most trails without being jacked up and seriously bobbed and armored

If you're going fullsize, then i would consider Ford Raptor or the upcoming redesigned Dodge PowerWagon. :girl:

Very true. The tundra lacks a lot of the offroad capabilities of the 4Runner IMO. Its better suited on the road.

I heard, on another forum, that the Raptor is more designed for desert racing than trails. Don't know how true that is. I think I'll stick with looking at 4Runners. Thanks for all the feedback.

They do make the "TRD Rock Warrior" special edition. I had thoughts of buying a white one before the 5ths came out and took one for a test ride.Gobs of power with the 5.7L and really was a nice truck.I liked how they blacked everything out.I guess you can get them in red too for 2011 as I just saw on a video. Toyota Tundra Rock Warrior

It would be fine for normal offroading but not near the capabilities the 4runner has ,especially after a few mods on the 4runners.But who uses them to their full capability anyways.

My buddy has a black roc warrior and that thing is sweet looking, but still huge. Its makes the 285s that are on it look so small. Nice truck inside and out though, love the wheels too.

Ya , I bet if you put a lift on it and some 35 inch KM2's they would really look sweet.

I didn't see one for the Rock Warrier specific but Total Chaos and Icon makes suspensions for them. Go over to the Tundra forums and ask there.Here's a video of the Total Chaos truck.....

Bigger is better

Funny story:
I was looking at some property in Centerville TX. It was raining and it's pretty hilly in Centerville. A lot of clay there too. My host and his partner were both driving Tundra 4X4 with BFG/ATs. It had been raining about 2 days straight. The second property I visited was 120 acre tract with 70-80' elevation changes and a live creek. They sent me down the hill toward the creek and they went around the top side. Turns out one of the fellows was stuck on a hill, in a side ditch. The other fellow was there to get him out. I drove every road on the propery, some twice, no issues at all. The creek bottom had several 1-2' clay washes and a lot of sandy mud. used 4X4 high and never really felt like things were at all 'iffy'. I drove out staight up the hill they sent me in on and 'Bubba' got out of his truck and stood in the rain to watch. When I came out on to the highway he walked up ... I rolled down the window. He said "what the hell is that?" I told him it was a 4runner, he walked aroung back and checked. When he came back, he reported, "**** ... ****" and was shaking his head as he walked off.

It was very hard for me to act serious ... he didn't know that I was wheeling the **** out of his creek bottom to impress my 16 year old son. :lmao:

Tundra is a good off-road truck, the T4R is better off-road vehicle. Unless you are toting a real load, then the T4R can't match the Tundra. It's not even close.

The Runner is okay, but it needs big HP.

Why don't you do the first ever engine swap.......from the Tundra to the 4Runner :driving:
Then you would really have something!

The KM2 is like motocross tire for your truck. Wheel-base can be (and was) a big deal too, but big HP didn't help him a bit. The 4Runner can go a lot of places a Tundra can't go.
