4runner vs Grand Cherokee

So I was searching around for some 2nd gen, 3rd gen diff info and found this debate. VWVortex.com - 3rd Gen 4Runner VS. 2nd Gen Grand Cherokee It is from a VW forum and features the classic debate of whether to buy a 3rd gen or a 2nd gen GC. I found it interesting because it is from a non Toyota or Jeep forum and a non-offroading forum. Just thought I would share. Looks like the 4runner won. arty:

My friend down the road has a 00' GC limited and its such a POS. On its 2nd tranny, all kinds of squeaks and rattles. Suspension is shot, bottoms out all the time and it has a horrible highway death wobble. A few months back we took a snowboard trip to a mountain that was like 3 hours each way, scariest freaking ride of my life.

JC vs. 4Runner ??

That's easy:
One is a pile of crap and other (from Japan) isn't.

I've had 4 JCs, so NO ONE can tell me otherwise.

Haha, I was in the same boat last fall. Couldn't decide on weather to get a 2nd generation Grand Cherokee or a 3rd Gen 4Runner. Nearly all of the Grand Cherokees I went to look at or called about mechanical problems of some sort. Seeing these comparisons make me feel even better about my decision.

My daughter has has an '02 Jeep Grand Cherokee that she bought with low miles several years ago. The AC has failed for the 3rd time, major failures too. First one needed a whole new HVAC unit, common problem, now it looks like the evaporator is leaking. The check engine light comes on periodically for no apparent reason. And it's a gas hog. Oh, and one her and her husbands best friends is a Chrysler Master Tech, he says you can't fix em to last.

Well, I just got rid of my '97 GC Laredo that I bought in 1999 with 18k miles for a 2001 T4R with 151k miles. I will say that my Jeep never spent a single night in the shop with a mechanical issue, BUT, it had just turned 118k miles and everything was giving me signals. The trans was beginning to have some issues, the motor was developing a "knock" and the suspension was wearing out. I knew that it was just a matter of time, so I decided to take a different road and do try 4Runner "thing". We'll see how it goes, but my initial impressions are pretty good. The GC had way less power even though it had 20% more displacement. It struggled to go 85mph down the highway and the T4R goes 90 effortlessly. The T4R has more creature features, but I'm a basic kind of person so I don't think I'll use most of them, although the power rear window is really nice when driving!

I'll have a better idea once I get all of the maintenence done on the Toyota and drive it a few thousand miles, but so far I like it. Time will tell.................................................................
