4Runner with Sunroof Woes

What a surprise right?
Was opening my sunroof the other day and it got about half way open and heard a loud CRACK.
It's a '05 with about 23K on it.
I pulled a long piece of plastic from the side of the sunroof that I believe was some kind of rail covering or molding.
So far the sunroof still opens and closes OK, but noisily. It also has a rattle now, probably the other part of this plastic strip that is still inside there somewhere.
I guess my question for you fellows that have had this repaired is: has Toyota come up with a semi-permanent fix or is this something that I will have to keep dealing with? I plan on keeping it for awhile.
When they do fix it, what kind of warranty do they give you?
They better not just replace this rail covering or whatever it is and call it good.
I want it fixed for good. Hopefully this isn't asking for too much.

I have also wondered about this. I've only had my 4R a couple months but I love the sunroof. I would hate to start having the same problem that I've heard others complain about here.

Are there any preventative measures or maintenance (like lubricating) that people can do to avoid having issues with their sunroof???

When my sunroof broke, Toyota replaced a bunch of parts under warranty. Thank goodness it was underwarranty since it cost closed to $1k!!! They gave me a 12 month/12k warranty on the parts and labor for the sunroof, but it was a moot point since I would have still been under warranty during that time frame. This is why I'm glad I have an extended warranty. There are too many expensive parts on this truck, all it'll take is one repair to pay for the extended warranty. Don't take my comment that the 4Runner will fall apart, since my truck has been problem free since the sunroof was fixed.

I will probably be looking closer at the extended warranty.

sharp4runr - how long ago did they fix it? I wonder if they used up-graded parts on it, if thats possible.
I use my sunroof alot, thats the reason i got it. Just don't want it to become a reoccuring issue.

I thought I saw somewhere there was a recall or a TSB on the factory sunroof for something along the lines of the problem you experienced.

I dont have to worry abou it though since I have an aftermarket SolAire sunroof in mine. Long, Long story on that whole deal that a search for sunroof would find too.

Yeah, I think alot of us here were following your sunroof cluster f*ck. Glad it finally worked out for you.

Anyone else know of a TSB or recall on our sunroofs??

My sunroof was fixed more than 2 years ago and no problems since (knock on wood). I use it a lot when the weather is nice. It's the biggest sunroof I've ever had in a vehicle so I'd hate to lose the feature. Again, hopefully I never have to use the extended warranty, but it is there...

Yeah the problem I remember was a rattle, but I think they put a plastic sleeve on something to remedy the rattle. Perhaps his had this updated sleeve installed, and that's the piece of plastic that got in a bind and broke?

Just speculation but all I can conclude without actually seeing what the TSB fixed and what's broken on his.

I had the TSB done on my 05 sport at 35K just because I did not want to pay for a big repair after the warranty ran out.The tech told me that clumps of hard grease was the primary problem that causes the sunroof to fail.He cleaned the tracks out and re lubed with special grease and adjusted cables and it works smooth and has no more rattles or wind noise.
