Went to work this morning all was fine. Went out to run an errand, start it up put it in gear and nothing. shift the transfer case in neutral and then back into 2 high and bingo good to go, so I figure it must have over time become slightly unengaged. Come back out to go back to work, same thing. This time when I shifted it it didn't help but when I engaged the multi mode button 4wd engaged and it was fine. Turned off 4wd and continued back to work. Has been fine today, but not sure what to look at or what could be wrong. Please help

OP can you clarify if the tranny actually went into gear or not? When you pushed the gas pedal did it just rev like it was in neutral?

Just went through similar stuff with my gf's taco. After the torque converter went out and ruined the tranny, I had a new one put in... couple weeks later the new one was not shifting into reverse. Tranny was almost a quart too full, took some fluid out and no issues since. Also had a shift issue which was just a simple throttle cable adjustment.

Check your tcase fluid and your tranny fluid level, maybe plug in an OBDII and see if there are any pending codes.

When you said "pushed multi mode, then shifted back into 2 and it worked" it threw me off like it's a sensor/electrical issue. Go find some dirt and drive a little bit in each tcase option to get that fluid moving and gears turning.

It was like it was in neutral in all gears.

Do this and see if you can still replicate the problem:

Go find some dirt and drive a little bit in each tcase option to get that fluid moving and gears turning.

only went in gear after I after i pushed multi mode. Before it just revved. I pushed multi mode again to turn it off and the truck still moved and shifted as normal the rest of the day

Tranny is full fluid is not red red but red no codes stored or pending using torque pro

Could be a failing neutral safety switch. Not sure if a code would be set if it fails.

How new is the 4runner to you?
