4runner wont start, only clicks

Truck wouldn't start last night, so I got a friend to jump it which didn't help, it eventually just started up. This morning truck wouldn't start agian. I checked the voltage and its got the voltage. Checked the voltage to the starter, but how do I check voltage out of the starter? I want this fixed fast. I need to know wether its the terminals or if its the whole starter..

It clicks and starts eventually.

It starts when you tap on it too.

Sounds like the starter contact problem many have had. I haven't or I would help, but a search on 'starter contacts' will probably get you a quick answer.

Thanks, if taping on it helps does it still sound like a starter contact?
 
Here is a quote from another thread my suggested search brings up:

"sounds like the starter contact have worn out. maybe not recommended but an easy way to test if the starter contacts are worn is: when your car doesn't start and you only get the 'click' sound from the solenoid, try giving the starter housing a couple of hard knocks while trying to start the car. if it starts up, it's most likely worn contacts. "

I don't know myself, but sounds like that's a yes.

I would be really surprised if it wasn't the contacts.

Parts needed for starter solenoid rebuild.....

Plunger magnet switch 28235-54380
Kit starter repair 28226-54340 (contact, bolt, o-ring, paper and plastic pieces) larger bolt/contact
Starter kit 28226-72010 (contact, bolt, o-ring paper and plastic pieces) smaller bolt/contact

Don't strike the starter repeatedly to make it work. These starters are not like the old starters where that method may help. These starters work off of magnets, and if you whack it hard enough, the magnet breaks, and then you DEFINATELY need a new starter. Let's be civilized, real auto technicians, and take care to remove and clean the battery and starter contacts.

This all, provided your battery is good...how old is it? Many times it can run your lights, radio and accessories but not enough juice to crank the starter. 12.6v.
 
It seems as if the starter is getting stuck and running with the engine now. I think im going to just replace the starter since there only 100$, Does this seem like a good idea? Let me know if theres anything else I will need.

I can get a rebuild kit, but honestly this truck has 200,000 miles on it and a starter isn't all that expensive.. It will probably go one day better to replace whole?

Yeah just replace it...a new one from Toyota will run you like 300 bucks so get a reman

duralast is crap...BUT lifetime warranty!

how hard is the starter to do? would the lifetime warranty be worth it?
 
I would never replace a OEM Denso starter with a remanufactured POS from the "parts store".
Has anyone every seen one fail, other than the solenoid? I have not.
 
This is pissing me off, stupid starter is hard to get to, cant find a jack high enough for my truck... AHH!!

neither would I, if I could afford an OEM one...at the moment I wouldn't spend 300+ on a starter so I'd go with a reman
 
I did the solenoid rebuild wasa pain in the butt to get the starter out but the rebuild took 10 minutes and now is working like a champ. I have 191k on mine and was told by more then a couple toyota specialists " hey if you want to waste money I will replace the starter I could use a spare. Just do the rebuild the starter never fails"
 
this may sound stupid, but check the water levels in your battery. i had this problem after my battery drained, and all it was, was a low water level in the battery. $.98 for some distiled water and presto chango, working again
 
Nah it's definatly the starter.. I'm either going to replace the piston and contacts myself or take it to a local starter shop.
 
I just did the rebuild on my on sunday and replaced the contacts, and boy were they worn, I'll try to post pictures tonight of how bad they were, it was only that battery side contact that was really bad. All in all I'm very glad that I didi this instead of putting in a new starter

Thanks for the parts numbers. Mines went out last week an was able to start intermittently. I just went ahead and ordered the repair kit and did this myself. Some of the bolts are kind of difficult to get to but do-able. I used one of those swivel heads to get my socket in there. She started right up...so beautiful
