Hi everyone,

I am new to the forum and just purchased my first Toyota over the weekend and have some questions about it.

Its an 05 4Runner sports edition with the 4.0 v6. First off I love the truck it runs great and my first tank of gas yielded 21.5 mpg!

First question is I am new to Toyota and I was wanting to put a K&N CAI but I was told that Toyota as an extra carbon filter before the regular air filter. Would that mess up anything if I got rid of that to put the K&N on? Also I've done a little reading and have seen some problems with the MAF sensor when people try and put on a CAI, is there any truth to that? I guess I would just like to know if there is a CAI that will work on my 4Runner and not cause problems, like running lean or throwing a engine code?

Second question is I was wanting to do an exhaust system. Does anyone know if its possible to run catback duels? I have always ran Flowmaster original 40s on all of my trucks (from 4 cylinders to 8 cylinders lol just always like the sound even on the 4) but was thinking of trying out their new 10 Series muffler. Any thoughts?

If you over oil your filter it will mess your MAF reading up. Also CAI are only good for that whooshing air sound when you press the gas pedal.
 
FWIW people remove that carbon filter all the time even if they're staying with the stock intake. It hurts nothing to remove it.
 
you can run an intake with no issues.. go with AFE with the dryflow filter so no more oiling your filter plus its sealed and draws air from your fender compared to KN&N's open setup.

As far as exhaust i use to have a magnaflow muffler with the resonator deleted till i got tired of the noise and went back to stock

What does the carbon filter do that the regular filter doesn't? Just out of curiosity. Lol so even if I get a K&N it won't hurt taking the carbon filter out....

I had one guy tell me, putting a CAI will make the engine run lean. I thought that was kind of weird, is there any truth to that?

I've had the full K&N CAI for about two years now, and it runs like a champ. It's due for it's second cleaning and re-oil soon, but it's holding up great. Plus, I love the sound it puts out with the 4.7L, (not sure how it sounds with the V6 tho).

As rebelbowtie said, over-oiling your K&N would probably mess with the MAS. If you do it right, you'll have no problems. Some will argue and say the K&N lets in too many particles in your motor, but IMO, that's what gets burnt off thru the process of ignition. And if you're running good fuel and not going thru dust storms, than you'll be just fine. :dammit::hatsoff:
 
Yep not to many dust storms in the TX hill country. Lol so I should be ok.

Anymore ideas about exhaust....

Like rebel said, the OEM air box is a CAI so if you want to spend $$$ on some extra noise that's fine. IMHO, I'd save that CAI money and spend it on another more useful mod. Suspension upgrade? Wheels? Tires? Just a thought :snacker:

I have removed the carbon filter on both my 03 and my 08 4Runners and had no problems. I'm running a K&N drop in filter and definitely noticed a gain in the amount of pickup that it has. I removed the HCF filter and never thought twice about it, that thing does nothing
 
I am skeptical on removing the HCF because while there seem to be no adverse side effects, there also isn't any benefit. It's like de-screening your MAF, it doesn't hurt performance just leave it alone.

I'm probably going to hold off of the intake for a while and put the money into my exhaust system first. I'd like to get headers and do a catback dual exhaust. I'll probably put a drop in K&N filter and call it good.

I don't really do much offroading so the stock suspension is fine for what I do, but some nice tires would definitely be nice. ;)

Got to budget it all out though. lol
