4Runners for off road??

I was thinking that in a few years if I get a new 4runner I may want to keep my current "06" V-6 sport and make it into an off road rig (street truck as well) but upgrade the tires to MT's deeper gears, Lockers, lift, winch, etc. etc.

My question is do you think a 4runner with some mods will do "ok" off road or should I just sell it in a few years and buy a used jeep to drive off road as a second rig?

Do a search since there's plenty of off road capable Runners on this board. They do fine as any other Runner would do with just a few mods over stock.

Having seen the numerous mods by numerous members here, it is evident that the runner is very capable off-road (even in its stock form). It will certainly do more than "ok". I say keep the 4runner. If you do mod it for heavier off-road use you will be making an already great and reliable vehicle even better.

Your 4runner will do fine. I had an OME lift and it did everything Iwanted to do. I went with TTORA last year to Big Bear, CA and My 4runner did not need a strap for anything. I had 3 Tacoma's all with the TRD locker, and I am impressed with the 4runner Offroad. Now I have DR Coilovers, and the ride is awesome. Here are a few pics from when i gone wheeling.

4th Gen 4Runners are great offroad with just a few suspension/clearence improvements.

I say keep it. Take a look at Good Times' or Bala de Plata's 4Runners, both of them have pretty extensively modified 4Runners along with many other members who have made modifications to their 4Runners as well. You might have to ditch the X-REAS system though if you're looking to lift with something other than spacers.

It's the Shrockworks bumper. Very well built and really improves your off road approach angle.

I don't remember the exact weight but with the winch I think it was pushing 200 lbs. You defintley need to change to stiffer front springs to compensate for the added weight. With the OME 886 front springs, it feels great. :biggrin2:

I'd say what are you waiting for to go off road ?? Go off road with the current one , you'll be amazed with it. Put a nice set of all terrain tires on it first though.

My truck is stock with the exception of oversized Revos 265/70/17. I've gone everywhere I wanted to with this thing , I always off in some field , trying to climb some hill , going through some ditch , ect...

Yes it would be nice to build a tricked out one . But in stock for and full boxed frame , and all the other little toys it is one of the most capable off road SUV's on the market today.

I'm really surprised by this question, unless I'm misreading it. Everything I have read about the 4Runner attests to its offroad prowess, even completely stock. I imagine with a modest lift and some better tires, it would already be a beast. Nothing else in this class even comes close, as far as I can tell. The V6 is plenty of power for offroad, and there are few nameplates I'd feel as comfortable sporting in the farflung boonies for camping or a photo shoot. Am I missing something? Not trying to be disrespectful here on my second post.

32" tires with stock suspension and rear locker have gotten me pretty far but sliders are coming soon.

No problem. Your right, the stock 4Runner will take you many places with solid traction and reliability. :bigok:

The only motivation to modify with suspension lifts or added armor is if you want to push it beyond it's capabilities in the stock configuration. For the majorityof folks, the stock 4Runner will take you where ever you want to go.

It's the rest of us with mod crazy brains and the desire to drive insane trails that drive the suspension lifts and body armor. :biggrin2:
