I was wondering would a 4runner be as good as an FJ off road?? They do run similar running gear.

I believe the FJ is a bit better in stock form, but not by much. And don't forget the FJ is available with a factory rear locker, which is an asset.

If you are going to be doing some serious rock crawling with extreme angles in general or very tight spots the FJ might shine. I really don't know, I can only relate to a couple of experiences with my 4runner that made it through some tough spots, and it kicked ass.
The 4runner looks a lot better too, and your range with the V6 is over 400 miles on a tank of gas. Could use just a little more clearance though.

Sorry, I should have qualified that statement. I have the 07 Sport V6 4WD, loaded, heated leather seats. I'll never do leather again btw. Mostly highway miles, no A/C (it was an early morning trip home), and not over 2000 rpm's unless needed, non-highway miles on pavement. I have BF's A/T KO's 17". I've refueled 22.5 gallons with 460 miles on the trip meter. I have the receipts somewhere where I wrote down info from start to finish. I may be off slightly, I'll get back to you on that. I've pushed it to the limit on a few occassions with the A/C on part of the time, and more frequent stop and go traffic, and have still gotten 400+ miles on a tank of gas. When I say push it to the limit I mean using nearly all 23 gallons. I like getting off the beaten track, and I need to know just what it can do. The off road stuff with A/C on and 4WD on, I've gotten 350+miles on a tankful of gas.
Aside from all the other great things about the 4runner, the tank capacity and miles per gallon is where I started looking for vehicles in it's class http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm. It's my first truck so I considered them all with apperance being second, then off road capability, and it came down to the Tacoma, and the 4runner. Being a golfer and a bowler, the 4runner was more practical for lugging around my equipment. I say Tacoma because of the off roading capability. I was a little skeptical of the 4runner, until I checked out the Sport edition, and that was all she wrote.

FJ and for a few reasons that others have stated. I would add that it looks a bit less refined leading it to be beat up, mine is too nice in my mind. Now a punched out 4Runner is cooler. All flat down here I get 19 last tank (don't drive much)was 10/9 range say 70.
