I have a 06 V-6 5 speed auto 4runner and I was in 4 low the other day and I was wondering will it even go into fourth and fifth gear in 4 low?? or just stop at third gear. I did not wan't to wind it up to try it.

Not sure if it'll go in those gears, but you're limited to like 35mph in 4LO so it's kind of a moot point LOL.

I'm hoping you peeps were off road or driving in some loose sand/gravel when you had your trucks in 4-LO. If you were driving on asphalt/concrete, then that whining sound you were hearing was your gears slowly grinding themselves apart.

As a matter of fact I was on a dirt road and went into low just to make sure it was working as this is a new 4runner I bought to replace the one I was involved in an accident in. The new 4runner is a V8 and my other was a V6. When I was in low with the V6 runner I don't remember it being louder or slightly louder and was wondering if this was normal. Besides that, unless you have the center diff locked why would that be much different than being in hi as long as you were going very slow? Just curious is all because of your statement.

Your aren't suppose to use 4-LO on any non giving surface. It will cause your gearing to bind up because of the lack of slippage in the Torsen limited slip axle.

You're thinking of having the center differential locked in which case you're right. You can be in 4-low without having the diff locked and then there's no binding.

What JB said. Fro-Runner, you are used to the old part-time 4wd system where going into 4-LO ties the front and rear axles together. This is NOT the case with the 4th gen 4runner. If you go into 4-LO, then it's like 4-HI. No binding. Torsen center diff ALLOWS for speed differences between front and rear axles, just like when you're in 4-HI. However, if you LOCK the center Torsen diff, then you need to be on a slippery surface.

I want to correct my previous post. I was offroading yesterday, and remembered to check this. My 4runner would only use 4 gears in low, and would not go into overdrive in 4WD low gears. I ran the rpm's way up just to be sure.
So basically, we have 4 gears when in 4WD Low. Sorry to originally post wrong info, my mistake. :bash:
