4th gen 4runner - gas pump keeps shutting off

This is really starting to piss me off. Different pumps (same gas station), I have to keep shifting the pump in different directions while holding the handle at a low position to fill-up. Takes about 10-15 minutes to fill-up.

My wife's Camry at the same gas station fills right up, no problem.

Any ideas where to start?

In order to get gas in, you have to get air out. Look into your tank vent which is typically part of your vapor recovery system.

Mine does the same thing from time to time, very annoying. Few months back it did it EVERY time I tanked up, now only once in a while. I believe the check valve is part of the actual tank. Plastic welded together.

My guess is the fuel filler neck is delaminated, fuel can't flow so the pump shuts off. Had this issue in my 99' Land Cruiser. I'd imagine the parts and issue are similar

Funny you should mention that, I have noticed a faint fuel smell for quite some time.. how do I fix it? ty

In CA, I remember having same issue on different vehicles. They have those darn fume collars on the fuel nozzle. Never had this problem elsewhere. I just had to slow the pump down.

I get that at one particular gas station. Now I go to another one down the block. No problems since the switch.

I just filled up at Costco and had this problem. Sometimes it happens but other times not. I'll be following this thread

Otherwise leave it in the desert to dry out the overflow emissions thing.

That's because you think a gas card is some kind of preloaded magnetic stripe that allows you to purchase fuel; it is not.

So that's what everyone is referring too, it was the vapor recovery nozzle that had me stumped, we don't have those here in South Carolina...but have seen/used them in other states while traveling, I just thought it was a rubber boot to keep from spilling fuel on the paint, now that Toyrundrive posted what he was referring too I now know what going on here, I thought everyone was going crazy, I never have any issues when filling up in my state!!

Fixed!

Went back to the same pump, she pumps like a dream now. Here was the fix, disconnect at the highlighted points in this diagram and blow air through with a compressor. My Charcoal Canister Filter was very dirty, not sure how it got that way.

did you drop the tank to access the highlighted parts, or you simply crawled under the car. i have been battling to resolve a persistent p0174 error code - bank 2 too lean.
i have high LTFT on bank 2, really stumped.

someone mentioned doing a fuel system pressure test, bought the kit off amazon, but dont know how to hook it up

Likely have the same issue. I just looked underneath and you can see it on the driver side rear corner of the spare tire. Looks like it may be removable without dropping the spare, I'm gonna work on mine tonight. Having to babysit the filler at the pump is annoying as...
