4th Gen 60 Side Platform Bed Build

What follows is a build for a single platform bed utilizing the 60% side of the 4th Gen 4 Runner. I hope some will find this helpful or even inspiring to create something better.

My objective was to build a platform for an existing mattress which I purchased as an upgrade mattress for a travel trailer bunk model. This 6" (30'x72") foam upgrade mattress is available at RV centers or on-line. I also want the platform to be easily storable.

The project is not completely finished--still have a 60" piano hinge to install to access 3 compartments under the platform from inside the vehicle. Going to be putting in a rifle rack under the platform and I also have a couple electrical mods to do to provide all time power to the rear windows and a momentary switch for the lift gate to help get out. However I am also impressed with the left rear door for getting in and out.

I had to try it out in my garage during the build and took a small cat nap! Maybe a little closer to the ceiling compared to my old truck canopy but my canopy didn't have the roof handles to help move around nor did it have the easy to reach moon roof. Pretty awesome!

One picture I did not post is of the headboard and how that fits the floor behind the front seat. I will get a shot of that and post the dimension of each 2x12 used in a separate post and also include the final pictures of the clothes locker/rifle storage once I have completed it. May take me another week.

This is looking great! I like the idea to leave the room on the side for extra storage etc rather than building a full size platform that leaves no room for extra gear.

Are you planning to just put this in when you plan on going out or is this staying in long term?

60 Side Bed

Thanks. My plan is to use it for a motorcycle rally once a year, and put the 60 Side Bed back in for hunting season. I also built a utility trailer that hauls my Honda CT110 and converts into a kitchen.

Kind of developed into a neat freak so everything will fit under the 60 Side Bed and plan to keep the 40 Side open for movement. Hope to load my clothes and gear in two compartment under the Bed plus eventually have a battery and solar inverter in the last small compartment next to the lift gate.

I love the idea of having it take up basically half of the rear area instead of the whole thing.

The carpeting and finish gives it a nice look too. Definitely a fan of this setup.
I’m going out this weekend for just a quick trip with some friends and don’t feel like dealing with a tent and everything so I’ll just be staying in the 4Runner, would love to have a setup like this...

4th Gen 60 Side Platform Bed Completion

As promised I wanted to record the dimensions I used to make this bed. Find below pictures of the gun rack, and the gear bins which are accessed through the platform piano hinge. And find the dimensions of each support going forward to make for a level platform when the vehicle stands on level ground.

It’s 6’ which just fits. I slept on the same bunk mattress in my truck canopy without issue but the lift gate does have a curve to it which might be a little restrictive-we’ll see. Heading into the mountains next week! I’m 5’10” but for a guy any taller it would be tight for sure.

The front passenger seat head rest provides a very nice head rest for reading or watching a movie with plenty of leg room. But it could be a fetal position to sleep.

just wanted to say this is a good build, good job!

I want to make a good setup where the mattress is on the ground and instead storage is what stacks up. I enjoy the head room and being able to sit up in the vehicle.
