How good is the system, I presenty have the Alpine 8063 (think thats the number) with the LCD Display as well as the shock and Microwave sensors, I am thinking about removing it form the Jeep Wrangler and spending the 200.00 to have it installed in the new runner. It as all the bells and whistles, doors,windows, and if im not mistaken can even control the moonroof, What would you guys do.

I say keep the alpine system and have it installed... it's features are likely more advanced, and more capable than the factory unit.

From my point of view the biggest weakness of any factory alarm system, no matter how sophisticated, is that it is installed exactly the same way every time. Enough time with a shop manual or a sample vehicle and you should be able to come up with a way to defeat the system quickly.

=========================================

What's the goal of the alarm install ?

1) Is it to act as a theft deterent ?

By adding an alarm you can hope that a less determined thief will go find an easier target. A truly determined thief will find a way to take it anyway (towing etc.)

2) Protect the contents ?

By adding an alarm you can hope that a less determined thief will go find an easier target, but it doesn't stop Smash and Grab.
I saw the aftermath of this plenty of times while I lived in New Orleans, sometimes you would walk down the street and see 8-10 cars in a row with a window smashed out. Some people even had the balls to pull this while you were stopped at a light, still sitting in the car! :bugeye:

3) Add convenience features to the remote ?

Open & Close windows/sunroof, Remote start, etc

===================================

An alarm is just part of a package you still have to watch where you park, keep any valuables out of sight/reach, etc.

In my opinion the install makes or breaks the alarm system. If your installer just sticks it up under the dash with double sided tape in the drivers footwell, that makes it real easy to disconnect the system's molex connector and throw the brain into the street in under 5 seconds.

Yes, I do have an aftermarket alarm system in my car
