4th Gen Backup Camera with Gentex GENK-332 Video Mirror

Has anyone ever installed the factory toyota backup camera with the video mirror?

I just saw my friend's tacoma with it and ME LIKEY!

It's five benjamins on here

Is it worth it? Or would it be better to go aftermarket and get a headunit that will have a bigger screen?

I currently have the stock radio so...I'm not sure..

ichanged my hu to pioneer avh 4400 with 7'' screen and installed a $33 license plate reverse cam from amazon...works ok..10months and counting...[knock on wood]

How much was the pioneer to buy and install?

the avh 4400 was about $340 on amazon, though a newer model 2013 is out now cost about $360 for the x5500 cost about$350 to fit last july, though its costing $450 to fit on my rav4 last month!..

u need the dash kit for a good fit.

Hmm did u do the install yourself? If so, is it plug and play after buying a harness?

If not, how much for the install?

i meant the wiring was plug and play. I have a Pioneer head unit which allows a back up camera which i do not have. The 4Runner is not that big.

i can sell you a kenwood DDX790 for almost the price of the pioneer. PM me if you interested. btw i am a kenwood dealer and a pioneer dealer, i own a retail 12volt store

I would not bother with the rearview mirror. if you want camera, just jump into the double din thing and swap out the radio. you will be much happier in the end. that 3.5-4" screen in the mirror is just a tad bit small.

you'll get more smiles out of the new radio

How difficult is the installation of the kenwood?

I'm mainly interested in bluetooth and rearview camera capabilities.

THE Installation costs isnt fixed in stone, i was charged $350 in july 2012 for my 4runner...while i was given a $450 quote last month..for an 04 rav4.....if you are tech savvy and know the kits to buy...its a 2 - 3hr job about $100 max in parts

install can be as simple as pay a pro to do it or spend quality time with your vehicle and DIY.

For me install is easy. I do it everyday. For you might be a project.

Breaking it down:

six - 10mm bolts get the radio out
wire up radio to harness or pac tato module if you have jbl
wire up metra or pac steering wheel interface
grab reversre trigger from fuse box area, so you need to take off an extra two 10mm bolts to get under dash out

hardest part is routing the camera thru the top boot into the tailgate. you can cheat and go under the bumper camera.

if you choose the tailgate, be prepared to look the condition of your tailgate switch that rolls the window up and down. it might be brittle and break off whn you go routing the camera. also be prepared for the rusty bolts to take off the trim where the toyota emblem is.

here is a hint besides the few i just gave you, about the plastic vapor barrier.
use a razor blade and cut it open like a flap. dont fuss with pulling it off, or else you will get this black gooey stuff everywhere. razor blade open, then duct tape it back together like in the picture below. key thing is use QUALITY duct tape, 3m ect..dont go cheap, or else that will defeat the purpose to cheating, you might as well just pulled the whole thing off. cheap duct tape will not last over time, it dries out and comes off.


So is it a easy job, i am a bad person to ask

If you were to pay me to install this stuff @ my store I'd ask for $200-250 depending on the unit you got. then ask for the car to be left for a few hours. cheaper install is not always better install.
