4th Gen Brake Bleeding Questions

Hi guys,

I've been reading some of the 4th gen braking bleeding posts and want to be sure I have this down before I tear into the car and do the brake job. I've always bled brakes in the following way (done this many times):

Lets assume all new calipers have been bolted on, brake lines connected, and ready to bleed.

1.) top off master cylinder

2.) bleed from furthest caliper to closest caliper to MC -> RP, RD, FP, FD

3.) have a partner pump the brakes (depressing only halfway down the pedal) while you open the bleed valve on the caliper. Continue to pump fluid until all air in line is gone, then tighten valve.

4.) repeat on remaining calipers.

Some questions:

Q1: I read that you have to put the key into the on position (without engine running) for the bleeding to work. Can anyone explain why?

Q2: I read that you should not run the MC dry while bleeding. Otherwise not only will you have to start all over but you'll have to take the car into the dealer for some SW related rescan. Can anyone elaborate on this?

Q3: How do you prevent the master cylinder from running dry once you brake the brake line connection at the caliper? Won't the fluid just continue to run out, cause the MC to go dry?

Q4: I've read some posts that say to bleed from closest caliper to furthest? What's the truth on this?

I'm glad you're willing to wrench and adding some life with new threads, but most of your new threads have already been answered if you are willing to search and read thru..

And the service manual is easily and readily downloadable. BR-3 of the service manual answers most of your questions.
