4th Gen Bumper Options? ARB v. Shrockworks, Other?

Looking to get a new front bumper - seen variety of pics, but most of the chatter on this forum that I searched was about 3rd gen bumper options.

Any recommendations, on what to buy or not to buy - best/worst experience.

Ease of install? Price? Price difference? Quality/Weight

I have a 04 V8 LTD, with new front Xreas shocks, and a daystar lift kit installed. Winch option in the future... but probably wont start out with one.

I do like the single center hoop Shrockworks version - looks tight.
The shop that I got my lift done at says they are an ARB authorized dealer....

Also, any good options for a rear bumper with a Spare tire carrier for 4th Gen? I didnt see any from ARB or Shrockworks... :wtf:

Front bumper options that I know about are Shrockworks, ARB, Demello Offroad, CBI.

CBI rear bumpers seem pretty popular.


Shrockworks is my favorite and most people on here use shrockworks. It is what I would go with, it looks much sleeker than an ARB in my opinion.

Also you will need to upgrade your suspension if you are going to add weight to the front or rear. New bumpers will make your 4Runner squat like a low rider.

agreed with the above post.. demello, cbi, shrockworks, seem to have the better looking designs. I will say ARB has some great engineering in there bumpers they pass the kangaroo carcus test lol.

I was mainly posting to tell you though when you add a bumper and winch up front your going to need stiffer springs that daystars not quite going to cut it.

A couple of other choices, though much less popular, are Tactical Armor Group, Aluminess (aluminum/lightweight bumpers for front & rear), and viper4x4. I have yet to see any members (here or on toyota120) who actually have any of these bumpers.

If you go with Shrockworks, be aware they do have a very long wait time. I believe that they usually state about 6 weeks, but most members seem to actually wait 4-6 months before they actually arrive.

IMHO, if you want to get something that is strong, and that you have a say in the design, you will have to get a custom bumper, and they aint cheap.

Ive had the Armorology and the Demello both look great IMO, but the Armorology is by far the strongest, tuffest bumper ive seen.

I have seen in person, other than the two list, Rockware, shrockworks, ARB, TJM, Irbis, Outdoor Logic, and Addicted offroad, and my first choice is Armorology, 2nd is Irbis (not sure if they are still making them) then Addicted Offroad (tubed)

A custom bumper is LOTS more than an a "off the shelf" bumper like the arb tjm etc etc but only say ouch once lol

I see you're up in the Pac NW (I'm in B'ham ), you might want to check out Perkin's bumpers as well. Their located in Puyallup and make some quality stuff. I really like their roof racks. Looks like their website is under construction: Perkins Performance | Quality | Integrity | Innovation

Did you leave a message or send an email? A lot of these fab shops (like perkins) don't always answer or respond immediately...

I emailed him about a rack before I bought my Gobi and it took him a few days to get back but he was a nice/helpful guy and willing to make any custom changes you want.

have you stopped to think that maybe the much heavier bumpers will put too much stress on the xreas shocks? even adding lifting coils like OME, etc. alone can cause problems. Hey moabchris,

Perkins is basically a one man shop so responses are a bit slow. Best thing to do is swing by his shop...he works most weekends. He is currently building a custom bumper for another 4runner owner based on his needs so you're not limited to his current bumper style.

Rear bumpers are the same thing. If you can think it, he can build it. He's going to build mine once I finish designing it.

If you want to see the shrockworks and the Perkins bumpers in person, a few of us can meet up locally. The last guy who ran the arb on the 4th gen sold it.

P.S. As others have said, suspension will need to be upgraded to put that much weight up front.

man i wish i lived on the west coast after buying a 4runner theres nothing for us over here on the east coast :sobbing: trying to send some designs to some local fab shops to see if i can get something started but it seems yall have a lot more availablity to parts for sure

Ya just gotta know where to look on the east coast!

I'll have some out in a few more months. Already have part of the front done.

Looks aside, what are any of your driving impressions with aftermarket front and rear bumpers? I am expecting a little wind noise and lower fuel mileage?

I've had my shrockworks front bumper for about 4 months and have had no ill effects wrt mileage, handling or wind noise. Btw I'm on stock xreas with 64k miles.

I am a huge fan of waiting for the right bumper opportunity to come up. I went with SW and color-matched it and it's amazing. If I'm moving slow (under 30mph) I noticed it takes a little more effort for the 4runner to stay at speed. When moving 40-60mph, it holds speeds better as objects in motion (that have weight behind them) tend to stay in motion. I haven't noticed too much drop in mpg either...probably only 1-2 max. Worth the buy as they are the best made and extremely well made at that.
