4th Gen Calipers

Greetings all,

My 03 Runner steering wheel started shaking as I applied my foot on the brake. It had been like this for a week. I found out that, the passenger side caliper has a problem - the pistons were frozen :confused :

I need a caliper and decided to call local dealer. The local dealer wants $212.00 with core. They'll charge $50.00 more without the core. Does this price sound fairly right?

I thought about buying part from the website, but not too sure about the qaulity and reliability. That said, can you guys please point me to the right direction, where to get this piece of hardware with fairly good price?

$ 212 probably IS a good price for a caliper assembly.
You can probably find a cheaper one at pep boys/napa/auto zone/advanced/etc, but you get what you pay for.

I have two 2004 SR5 (not Sport) calipers available. They have 50K miles on them.

I took them off my truck for my SAS.


$35 each + shipping.

I have the rotors too, if you are interested.

How many miles are on your truck currently and have your pads ever been changed?

Steering wheel shake when braking sounds like just warped rotors. Have you checked that out yet?

Are you doing or are they? Rockauto.com has many choices for significantly less. I use Rockauto frequently. They are good and deliver as promised. IMHO all the ones they show are good except for the A-1 Cardone.

I frequently buy stuff from RockAuto myself, and I've often wondered how the different reman companies rank. I have a A-1 Cardone distributor in my Mustang and have no complaints.

What can you tell me about A-1 Cardone? Is there an issue with their calipers? What is considered the "good" reman company for T4R calipers?

$85 each from Napa. Both of my fronts are from Napa and I can't tell the diffence. Buy a can of caliper paint if you are worried about surface corrosion on the outside of the calipers.

Don't waste your money on OEM calipers from Toyota because it is well known that they are prone to seizing their pistons.

I'd suggest buying the Napa calipers because they are made from Toyota castings, but they have an improved design for the caliper boot/seal to help prevent against seizing. In the case of calipers, you actually get a better design for less money by going with the NAPA calipers.

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't have too much faith in the OEM part when so many people are experiencing frozen pistons. Why buy another set of the same when they are prone to this problem?

As earlier said on the post, the passenger side caliper's pistons are the root cause; they stuck in the outward position. I took the caliper to a few local shops, but none can repair.

I'm not too picky about the parts/components of the car, but like most of us, I want what's I'm paid for:

Local Napa quoted me $177.12 per reman caliper with core. Autozone told me that its supplier doesn't have it.

Anyways, since am at it, I decided to replace both the calipers and rotors on both sides. I got rotors from Autozone for $60.00 each. I'm going to order from RockAuto as some of you gentlemen suggested. Do you have certain part/model number that you have used and feel comfortable with, please? I'm looking for the ones that fit 17" rim/wheel.

When you bought from RockAuto, how did you get reimbursed for the core?

Both lower inboard pistons were frozen on mine. That is why I put on Napa parts. If the OEM calipers can't go 62,000 miles, I will try something different. A good friend of mine is a mechanic at the local honda dealer and I asked him where to go for the parts. He told me they have the best luck with aftermarket parts from Napa. I barely broke $200 for both calipers and the pads to go with them. I already had the calipers off so I do not know what the core charge was. Hope this helps. By the way, that was last fall so prices may have changed some.

I heard the same about Napa...I had the same damn thing happen to me bro!!
got both my fronts from them .."REMANS" they work great saved tons of money after oems seized....then painted them.

has anyone replaced their calipers during their warranty/ext warranty? i have the 7yr/75k mile plat ext warranty and i hope this is covered if it happens.
