4th gen custom sub box build (pics)

Here is my custom sub box build thread. I like the sleekness of the JL stealthbox but refuse to overpay for it, especially since I already have the sub and you can't just buy the enclosure.

I got the idea from someone on here that built a similar box but I never got the dimensions so I decided to just kind of wing it. I figure since I had 2 sheets of 3' x 4', 3/4" MDF left over from building my workbench in my new house I can't go wrong.

NONE of these are by any means precise dimensions, but its what I tried. I dont know how it will work out.

I decided the entire width would be about 7" wide. So I started by cutting a few strips to be 5 1/2" wide. See pic for lengths.

I just cut one piece after another and test fitted them. Some of the angles didnt end up being how I had intended, but I think it will work out ok.

I honestly have no idea what the interior volume of the new (attempted) box will be. Hopefully it will sound good. This is as far as I got today, I will continue working on it tuesday and post what else I have finished.

Also, here is some pics of how I mounted my amp under the front passenger seat. I would say it took me 5-6 hours. I was in no rush and had the day off. Because of how the 4th gen runners have the rear foot vent I decided to mount the amp on some 2x2 wood to make room for air to flow underneath. Due to limited wood on hand I actually used one piece of 2x2 on one side and 2 pieces of 1x2 on the other side.

I ran 4 gauge wire to the amp because I plan to add another amp for the aftermarket speakers I will add someday. Never hurts to plan ahead. Here's how I ran the power cable for now. I mounted the amp fuse to the top of the fuse box. Just seemed like an easy place to put it.

I ran the cable down the center console and out the other side under the carpet to under the passenger seat. It was a PITA to get all the wires(4ga power, 4ga ground, turn on lead, interconnect) under the plastic and carpet and wasnt in the mood to take pics of that tho.

Anyhow, I will post tomorrow about how the rest of the new box build goes.

Yeah that is a good idea, what type of speaker are you going to put in that box? The one in the old box? Itil look nice once its all said and done! Keep us posted

Looks a little rough at the moment, but I'm sure you're still working on it. I mounted my AMP in the same place you did. Also, will you be able to put the tonneau (SP??) bar back in its place? I like the cover there so it hides the subs in the trunk...

I plan to use the same sub in the new box. Its an old Orion XTR3 DVC. I am running 350 RMS to it at 2 ohms. It does look a little rough now, however when i get some carpet and cover it all up it will look nice and clean (hopefully). As far as it fitting with the cover, its does...kinda. I measured it so the bar has no problem but as that top piece goes up it rubs a bit right where it hooks under by the tailgate. Like i had said, the angles didnt quite work out as i had planned and this is the main one. I wasnt really thinking about the cover when i was working on it.

I finished it all and got the sub in it, sounds good so far. Not as boomy as the old one was, which is fine with me. Ill post pics later.

Here is where i mounted the terminal for the speaker. Its along the part that goes down the back of the wheel well.

Here is what it looks like in the car, the rope around it is just temporary. Although it does hold it in quite nicely.

About the cover fitting, here is a pic of it under the bar

It doesnt hit so bad that i am worried about it, i kinda wish i had noticed this during construction but i didnt, so f**k it.

The reason it is notched on the backside is so i can still ge to the outlet if i need to

I am still working on how i am going to anchor it. I will go to the hardware store and see what i can find to do the trick. As soon as i get some carpet for it I'll post pics of the final product.

Some thick carpet should hide most of your handy work. One problem though, isn't the carpet going to raise the the height of the box (just a little) -- will the cargo cover still fit/function then?

Things are all finished now, it turned out really nice. The carpet did make it stand a bit taller but I had filed off quite a bit of wood at that corner and made it nice and round so the cover goes on easily now. The thickness of the carpet also made it so the lid to the power outlet rubs the carpet a little bit, but i can still plug whatever i need into it with no problem. I also filed and sanded all of the edges and took off any excess material i didnt need. The box was nice and smooth when i was done. I will post the final pics as soon as i take them and get a chance.

and here is how i have it mounted in right now. A couple of little d-ring type hanging brackets and some mini-bungee cords. It makes it easy to take out if i need to. And i dont have a problem with it moving/rattling at all.

nice job,,, looks great, but just an FYI, on the firewall, ya might want to put some silicone around that rubber gromment, that will prevent any water getting into the cab, i founf out the hard way.

DOES IT SOUND GOOD?

Hi, i have had my truck broken into couple of times already, so i decided to come up with my own designed custom box, but its just too damn heavy to do so. I was looking into this kind of box where it just goes on one side, but I've been told that it won't sound as good as it used to. So my question to YOU (and others who have it) is, does this ONE SPEAKER in a Compact box hits hard ? or is it just O.K. I would hate to spend so much time on it and still don't enjoy my music.

Looks like the one my audio guy put in. He cut the back out of the 4r which gave him more room. We used as much space as possible and switched the plug to the spaeker box itself. It gave us alot more room to work with. Mounted the amp on the box itself and so far so good. We used some long screws and a 2x4 in the back of it to mount it and I think it looks clean. Yours looks great and I'm sure it sounds good also. Nice work.

Edit: Yes for a 10" sub.....this thing sounds good. I get people saying there is more than a 10" sub in there when they hear it.

sub box build for my '04 4Runner Limited

This was my first attempt at working with fiberglass. Hope you guys like how it came out!
