4th gen in a wreck

After hearing a bunch of emergency vehicles from our house, we learned via FB about a rollover crash at the edge of our subdivision. Grabbed a few photos. Sadly, this 4th gen was t-boned on passenger side by a Tahoe. The jaws-of-life tool was used to extract the 4Runner driver. The person was conscious and moving their hands as they were loaded into the ambulance...good sign there.

It looks like there are side airbags equipped (in the last photo). Thank god that person had those. My next vehicle will have them for sure...

Damn.

Crashes like this are even more devastating when BOTH vehicles are heavy trucks/SUV's than if it were just two light cars. 3rd gens and up are luckily quite safe vehicles.

I currently drive a 1st gen 4runner. Home to 1-star frontal crash test ratings for the driver.

My uncle drives in the country, and his commute involves lots of empty 70mph two lane roads. Exclusively in darkness in winter. After over a decade of no-drama, about two years ago he nailed one in his 4th gen, hardly having time to decrease speed. 4runner ended up not even being totaled, both occupants had no scratches.

What a shame!! Let's just hope the driver walked away with minimal injuries. The passenger area looks like it held up pretty well.

Whoa. This makes me really wish my '07 had side airbags. I'll never understand why Toyota made people PAY EXTRA to have side airbags for the '07 4Runners.

I think it's because the 4runner is still a BOF, which means it's tailored towards offroaders
