4th Gen Motor in 3rd Gen?

Hi,

I have done quite a bit of research but haven't found any examples of someone swapping a 4th gen motor into a 3rd gen truck. Has anyone done this successfully?

no dont do it unless youre willing to fork up a ton of money for something thats not that great. The 5VZFE that's in the 3rd gens is a much more well built motor. If you are wanting to do an engine swap I'd do the 4.7L V8. All you need to do to make it fit is a 1" body lift. Other than that the 4.0L is a waste of time and money. You'd be better off putting that money into your 3.4L. A supercharger and fuel system will have the 3.4L smoking a 4.0L and thats about 1/2 the price.
 
what makes the 3.4 better built than the 4.0? And what makes the V8 better than the 4th gen V6- just more power with not much gas mileage loss?

Just curious

Typing V8 makes me think of tomato juice.

Ok Im not going to be 100% acurate cause Im gonna pull all of this from memory but you can look all this up on the net.

First and foremost Im gonna start with a legend so you all know what Im talking about
5VZ = 3.4L V6 | 1GR = 4.0L V6 | 2UZ = 4.7L V8 this just makes it easier to type ;):

So on a side note I want to make sure everyone knows that this is all based on my opinion. None of my good vs. bad comparisons are fact. Also Im basing my opinion on, what is the most cost worthy and what has the most potential.

Alright, to recap what I said earlier, I believe that if you have a 3rd gen 4runner with the 5vz and you're looking to get either a little bit or a lot more power I would do one of two things. Either dump money into the 5vz or buy a 2uz. If you have a lot of extra money and either you are or you have a smart mechanic, that would be the only reason to swap the 5vz out for a 2uz.
Now the 1gr motor is made out of completely different materials than the 5vz and 2uz and are each built on entirely different plattforms. To say one is better than another is kind of a hit or miss but in my honest opinion, beefing up the 5vz is deffinately gonna get you the most bang for your buck and also give you the best results.
So as mentioned earlier, the 1gr is built out of defferent materials than the 5vz and 2uz which probably is the biggest factor in my chosing the 5vz as the best. The block of the 5vz and 2uz are built from cast iron which for those who dont know, is the same materials as the Toyota Supra and the Nissan Skyline GT-R34. The reason this material is so great is that it can withstand extremely high temperatures and as much forced induction as you can throw at it. Remember what the Titanic was built out of...iron. So at this point you might be thinking, oh I can throw 20psi of bost into my runner and it'll handle it. No, although the blocks are built out of the same materials, the heads and the rest of the engines internals arent, but we'll get to that later.
Now on the other hand the 1gr may be a more powerful engine than the 5vz but you're pretty much stuck with what you get. The 1gr's block is made from cast aluminum, BUT the cylinder walls have a small layer of iron around them which does make the engine stronger but if for any reason you ever cause even the slightest amount of damage to just one of them, you cant just bore out the cylinder wall and call it good. The enitre engine has to be replaced :bash: So, if you were ever thinking about slappin that TRD supercharger onto the 1gr, that would probably be the worst mistake...ever, cause even though the cylinder walls have a layer of iron, the rest of the block is still aluminum and cannot withstand heat as well, so you have a much higher chance of not just destroying your engine but like I said before, you cant fix it, once that motor is toast, its toast and theres no reviving it. So, I just want to throw this out there, SHAME on TRD for making a supercharger for the 1gr.
So now finally we get to the 2uz which is pretty much a badass motor, the block is made from cast iron so it can handle a little bit of boost but in stock form it puts out 270 hp and 315 ft-lbs. Ya, I'd love to put that motor in my runner. The problem though isn't just the fact that getting your hands on one is gonna cost you a very pretty pennie but you cant just replace the motor. You have to replace the motor, tranny, transfer case, drive shaft, front and rear drive lines, fuel system, ecu, ect. I mean, we're not just talking about an engine swap, we're talking about an entire vehicle swap. So where this would be the coolest option to go with, its not the smartest choice, but I have seen this done a couple times both in a 3rd gen and a 2nd gen.
So to wrap this up, if you swap out your 5vz for a 1gr, ya you get 240 hp and 270 ft-lbs but you're stuck at that. Maybe if you did some internal work but even then, you cause the smallest bit of damage to those cylinder walls and :violin: bye bye engine.
The $2000 and you can have that 5vz pushing 240 hp to the wheels, thats like (I'm guessing) probably about 280-290 hp at the crank. Back in December I had the same idea and I actually bought a 1gr for $2200 and that was just the motor, tranny, transfer case and ecu. Who knows how much I would have paid by the time it was actually installed and working.
So keep that 5vz. It's a fantasitic motor and it will last forever, but if you or anyone has they're heart set on doing a motor swap, look into the 1UZ-FE. Not the 2UZ-FE, the 1UZ :biggrin2:
Here's a dyno test of a guy who turbo charged a 1uz. Its not a 4runner but...

Currently, car is dynoed at 324.5 rwhp and 324.7 rwtq at 8 psi without intercooler. I am sure that I can push it to 350 rwhp with more tuning and an intercooler. The stock 90 LS400 was dynoed at 172 rwhp. That is about 152 rwhp increase. That is about 20 rwhp per pound of boost. The car pulls very hard after 3000 rpm to redline. The dyno result on 01-30-03 was using stock fuel system. Please see dyno result http://www.lextreme.com/Dyno.htm I can not wait to see Stage II with estimated 500 rwhp. I would like to take this sleeper to the track and find out what this beast can do in 0-60, 1/4 mile and so on. I would not be surprise to see low to mid 13 seconds with proper traction and driving skills. Currently, my spare engine is being build by a 36 years of experience engine builder. He was one of the original engine builder for the legendary Carol Shelby in the 60's. The new engine is getting custom JE Dish pistons with over bored .020" along with O-ring head and groove block and ARP head studs and few other boost friendly goodies.

The 1uz is the best, it uses a 4 bolt main, all the rest are only 2 bolt. The 1uz is widely regarded as one of the best V8's ever made. If I were to go to all the hassle of a swap the 1uz would be the only engine on my list, but I am happy with my 5vz.

Also, I believe I read somewhere that the 5vz was designed with forklifts and other loading/work equipment in mind, so its a real workhorse thru and thru.

Yup, your correct.
The 5VZ was designed by Hino, Toyota's industrial division. It is an industrial powerplant by design. Built to last.
In my opinion, one of the best / most reliable gas engines ever made, by any company. Not the most fuel effecient, but the most reliable. :beer:
