Wow, did your runner stall? that last pic has me worried, i hope its ok. And you have a SE so it has a hood scoop.

im not down playin his pic but it looks so bad because he went fast into it. not speedy fast but if he would have made a wave to follow....wouldnt have risked the alt...batt or anything else..

To reply to the rumors-
BOTH 4Runners survived the day. Hopefully Ed will surface to confirm this.
The "Pond" depth was probably up to the top of the wheel wells but due to the entry angle the nose of the truck sinks in as you enter it. It then levels out a bit, and the photo was taken just as the nose of the truck (or perhaps bow of the boat in this case ) started to come up from the steeper entry angle.
Fireteacher mentions the speed at which I entered it. It was actually not that fast of an entry- the bottom of the "pond" is fairly rocky so it has to be negotiated relatively slowly. The "severity" of the pic is due to the entry angle.
As fireteacher mentions, you can form a bow wave to "follow" through the water that will create a small area of water behind it that is lower in height in which the engine compartment can "hide" in from deeper water.
The speed at which I entered the water was the proper speed and did in fact, form a bow wave. I was actually able to fish from it as I drove through
I've never had any long term mechanical problems with that water crossing. Although that was definitely the deepest it's ever been.
And yes, that's a Garmin Nuvi 350 GPS unit screenshot.

LOL...yeah, I survived. It was a lot of fun. No problems other than a dirty truck and a few surface scratches from branches on the tighter trails. They'll come out with some elbow grease. I let Karl navigate that last watercrossing...that was a little too much for my stock height 4Runner. Karl's right...the shot with the water coming over the hood was more for dramatic effect...the entry angle there was pretty steep. My new Nitto Terra Grapplers were great...no way the Dunlops would've made it thru parts of those trails.

i have seen a truck go into water that deep once in my life, i have it on tape but must find it. when i was in New England Tech for automotive my friends and i used to go offroading with a teacher of mine who had a range rover, im guessing it was a 99 or so, but we all had lifted trucks with like 35" tires and he was stock and he went into some water and it looked exactly like what you went through. we opened the hood after to check out the situation and the water didnt even go through because the rover is pretty much sealed in the front

Another reason to beware of too much water in the engine bay. These drain holes in the V-6 air filter assembly could also suck water in under the right conditions
Odds are that if you are this deep in water that water might already have been sucked through the wheel well intake anyhow
