4TH Gen Oil Change?

I changed my oil on Sat. but was unsucessful at removing the oil filter due to not having the proper tool. Now that I have the proper tool, my question is this

Can I remove the oil filter without draing the new oil that I put in? or will this spill oil all over the place.

I know some oil companies think their oil can last forever; i.e. 25,000 miles. They recommend you change your oil filter half way through the cycle. From what I have read you lose very little oil. Also, the filter on the V8 is upside down, so when you open it I would imagine you would lose just what is in the filter and I would guess most of it is drained when the engine is off. I do not think that all of the oil will spill out. I do not know for sure because I always drain the oil before I remove the filter. All I could tell you is oil comes out when you remove the filter even if all of the oil is drained from the pan.

You are 100% correct Peter 78. My dad just went for his second oil change and he has 27,000 miles on his BMW and my mom has 6,000 miles on her BMW and not even close to needing an oil change. I am almost ready for my second oil change and I have 5,500 miles. :eek2:

Why do you want to save the old oil? And the V8 filter is NOT upside down.

If you really need to do that. I would suggest you to drain the oil first and recycle it after you replace the filter.

oops, the picture made it look upside down. If it isn't then I think a little more will leak out, so you work fast or drain it first. I would put a dirty oil catch drain pan under the filter.
