4th Gen Radio Problems Anyone?

I just started having an intermittent problem with my radio. I have a '07 Sport that does not have the Nav unit but just the radio mp3 player.

Recently I have noticed that the head unit display goes out, none of the controls on the head unit work, however the steering wheel controls continue to function normally. I have noticed this problem twice now in the last three weeks and have not been able to find any common variables during the time it is happening. Once while I was driving it occurred, the other when I turned the engine on.

If anyone has any suggestions or feedback I would be greatly appreciative.

Additionally, does anyone know if this would be covered under warranty?

Huh. Weird! My first thought would be a loose connector. I'd probably pull the head unit out and take a look on the back side.

Same thing happened to my 07 Limited; Warranty replaced from Toyota. Take it in.

I took it into the dealership and without any questions beyond "what is wrong?" they said that they would order a new head unit and replace it at no charge.

After this experience I think I will be buying an extended warranty.

06 T4R Sport 35,650,,,Had the same radio problem. Only the wheel controls worked. All I did was push the front plate below the display and the connection reseated. No need to take out the unit. Works fine been about 1000 miles no more problems.

After this experience I think I will be buying an extended warranty.

Boy I just did. When I picked up my 4Runner last week, I decided last minute (since it wasn't *that* much more) to up my coverage to the "bumper to bumper" 7/100,000 warranty.

I did this since I've had my Tundra going on 10 years now (a 2000 model year, I bought in the Fall of 1999) - and it hasn't experienced a lot of failures (other than needing a new bank 2 position 2 O2 sensor about every 18 months), but knowing me like I do, I know that I will likely own this 4Runner at least 7 years and likely well past 100k miles.

And for those that argue that extended warranties on Toyotas are a waste, consider this, not everything *in* a Toyota is made by Toyota. Take the Nav System for example - that's a JBL product. And is covered in the "bumper to bumper" portion of a factory warranty or extended warranty.

:iagree: An extended warranty is like getting additional insurance coverage. It's great to have, just hope you never need it.

The nav being JBL is actually ok, IMO. Toyota spec'd it and it's from a reputable company. Here's a shocker for ya, the AC system in my '05 Taco is from Delco... yup, that subsidary of the in trouble General.

A few months ago, I turned my radio on and the screen displayed gibberish, though everything else functioned properly. I took a picture of it, turned the ignition off then on again and it worked fine. But I took it to the dealer, showed them the picture, and they replaced the radio no questions asked!

I guess I'm one of the few that think buying an extended warranty is saying that your car is a piece of crap and that you expect the failure to be so catastrophic that the cost is more than what you paid for the warranty.

Sorry, guys. I'm on my 6th Toyota and over 900,000 miles (in addition to 5 domestic vehicles and an additional 400,000 miles) and have yet to see the need for an extended warranty.

The Extended Warranty (7y/100k) on my 06 sport 4wd was $1500, but I got the dealer to throw it in for free, thanks to the carmax down the street having a couple cheaper T4Rs.

IMHO $1500 is well worth the benefit of never having to worry about things going wrong with your car.

This morning I notice my radio display was responding a little slow. It was almost like there was some powerpoint-esc transition scheme.

However I'll be replacing it with an Alpine CDA-9886 this weekend anyway.

knightbug...I have an 07 and had the same problem. I tried your suggestion of pushing on the panel below the display and it worked! Thanks...

By any chance are you parked in the hot sun, the display is blank and it is spitting out CD's? Mine does.
