4th Gen Speaker Replacement

So I just installed the Scion unit and am VERY impressed, which makes me want to do a speaker upgrade even more, but am wondering what my options are.

If I understand correctly, I have 6.5 speakers in the back, and 6x9 components up front. WTH is up with the 6x9 components, that's odd...

Anyway, I'm covered in regards to the back speakers, but am not quite understanding the specifics of my front speaker setup.

Are the 6x9 up front a true component system with an external x-over, or are they two separate speakers with the crossover built in the radio - or how does that work?

I'd like to keep 6x9 up front, but my options in 6x9 components are very limited. If I just get a regular set of 6x9s, can i still use those along with my current tweeters or buy a separate pair of tweeters to replace my current ones with.

Any info or thoughts will help...

I think 6x9's won't fit.

Most people use 6 1/2" round speakers in the front.

Why wouldn't 6x9s fit? Are most aftermarket just too much deeper than the 6x9 currently in there?

If I put 6.5 up there, that's going to mean custom fabrication right?

Get the Alpine Type R 5x7 components. They come with the plate to adapt to 6x9's. Done deal

People have had to create a mount for the 6.5 speakers.

6x9's will fit and sound great. I used the stock bracket that the OEM 6x9's came in and mounted them in there. I also have 6.5"s in the back. Currently the OEM 4.0" mid/upper's in the door are stock as i have yet to find a replacement for them that i like. They will be the most difficult swap out of the bunch as well as being the possible most error prone swap out of the 3 sizes.

I was able to fit 3 way components in the factory space up front. I had to make my own adaptor with MDF for the stock 6x9 space. I put the 6.5" woofer and the 4" midrange speakers in the 6x9 space (tons of room) and the tweeter of course in the stock tweeter location. I also just went with coaxial 6.5" in the rears since they are only for fill and with my amp they only get 50 watts anyway. I am very impressed with the sound of the 3 way components...I am getting more midrange than I have ever had from components and I have had tons of different systems. (this was my first 3 way component set up tho)

I put 6x9 in front by modifying the stock speaker mounting plate. I just cut out the cones and plastic legs and drilled some new holes in the stock plates. The biggest problem doing this was making a new connection for the wiring.
